YaMon! Jamaican II: Fiberglass Boogaloo

Jamaican 2 kit car for sale
Wow. Just…wow. We’ve never seen a more perfect distillation of the low-end car buying experience. We’ve got a no-engined kit car from the beginning of the Golden Age of Fiberglass (1969) based on a VW chassis, with no tires, two Keystone fake-Cragars, in Lancaster, being listed by a guy who doesn’t own it.

That’s right, the current seller bought it (on eBay, naturally), but ended up in financial trouble and never got the chance to have it shipped back to Oklahoma (we’re not making this up). The original seller is kind enough to let the current seller re-list it and sell it while it’s still rotting in his yard. In case you’re having a hard time seeing the potential of this fine automobile, the seller’s included a few examples of what you could be driving with after swapping in a few parts.

I admit that the body's got some nice lines, it has kind of an early Z-car look to it. But man, that's a start from scratch pretty much, and no telling what kind of shape the parts that are there happen to be in. Being that it's on a VW chassis, one should already assume that it's going to need floorpans. I'd have to let that one go.

Meh, not really. You can pick up good Brazilian aftermarkets for a few bucks and I'll weld em in for ya! 😉

Those "Examples" make my head hurt. Are they 24" rims? Ouch.

The seller hints that these kits could be set up with a V8, but on a Toyota truck frame? That doesn't sound right. Use some kind of tube frame and this might be a sick project powered by a SBC. But then, why not just get a 'Vette and have done with it? I wouldn't put a dime into this crock.

1. Age_of_Aerostar Avatar

Can you trust too much of what the owner says after showing those "example" pics?

Those example pics damn near ruined my morning. Shouldn't have to see that kind of thing before you've been fortified with coffee. Terrible.

I haven't been a fan to VW based sporting kitcars since I was 10 (well, except for Porsche Speedsters and Cabriolets). One of those old bug-based breadvans, on the other hand…

I had actually just learned about the Fiberfab Jamaican earlier this week as I was just doing some wikipedia research. Here's the information about Fiberfab: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberfab
And here's a pic of the Jamaican as it's supposed to appear: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1959_Austin_Hea
This one actually looks like it's about to be auctioned at Russo & Steele. Hopefully it was taken some previous year, pre-wind storm. Also, the picture I linked is of a Jamaican built on a '59 Austin Healey frame instead of a VW bug.

He replied to me about my comment being kinky, and I shamed him for saying that, and he shamed me in return. That was how Flick and I became friends. pj didn't come into the shaming until a little later, as you can see by the order of participants in this link. Hi Skaycog,
I'll have to check that out after work, but I think I know what post by Tempesjo you are referring to. I had no idea (or forgot, man my memory is not the best anymore) that the original chasers began with SF shaming you! This seems like a question I must have asked you already 😉 You know I asked SF to come here a while back? He said that basically his username was too long for here! So then I told him how I changed my screen name. He said he would consider it bust needed to step away for a while. I think that the 5.0 thing really bugged him, it's a shame. (ha – shamefest and all)
Anyway, I did some poking around for that clutch stuff for my Volvo when eating a late lunch. It depends what is wrong, but parts cylinders are around $100 while rebuild kits are around $20: http://www.swedishautoparts.com/122/volvo-122-clu… So I still want to find a sweat parts car to park by this great pine tree next to my garage. It'd be great for the fensui (like the Polish version) of the place, really class-up the joint 😉 Also I read that this system has a habit of leaking in a cold garage over a winter of non-use, so it might just be that.
But here's the funny thing I ran into while looking into the clutch: http://www.sw-em.com/swemkitspix.htm#122%20start%… Ha! The same place sells a kill/start switch because the key breaking in the ignition is such a common thing apparently!

Hi Skaycog!
Phew yesterday was another whirlwind day! But first, this illness stuff has taken a toll on Aga and me, it's hard to pin a real beginning but I'll start where I was not awesome. Things are good again this morning, sick and tired are not good.
Anyway two evenings back Aga and I were watching a movie when the kids were asleep. We were both tired, she fell asleep on the couch, so I stopped the film and we went up stairs to sleep. But instead of going to sleep she watched the TV in the bedroom, so I got to sleep late. That morning she had pulled the covers off of me and Max had his paws on my face. By then the birds were chirping and I could not go to sleep.

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

Next evening, same end, she's falling asleep after a card game, but then instead of going to sleep in the bed, she watches TV. You know she is sick so she was not thinking clearly, I had been worn-out doing so much at work and home, I asked to please she goes watch downstairs, she did not agree. So in the morning, again no covers on me, birds chirping. This was my first really bad thing I did.
I pulled the covers off her 🙁 That was really selfish and wrong, all I can say is that I was tired, but it's no excuse, I mean she is sick after all and it's just down right mean what I did under any circumstance. Anyway, another busy day, this time she's at the doctor's (fill you in later) and I get called to get Kevin from scouts. I race home, freaking bearings are seizing-up on this rear wheel now on the bike! I huff it home, get in the Volvo and go and get Kevin. I get there, no Kevin. They say the meeting ended early and that he's at a friend's house, one that was on the way home for me. I could have walked the stupid bike.

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

So I get home and Aga is now home. Jake is really sick. But she has all this stuff that she did not ask the doctor how to use, like face mask. Also she went to the pharmacy that does not explain anything. So I complain, while the kids are. "I want ketchup, I want juice." Again this was not the right thing to do, I'm ashamed. So she rightfully was upset with me.
Anyway things are great again, I really messed-up, asked for forgiveness, we're both tired, but she was also sick. I'm happy again. I need to work on not pushing her buttons like this. I'm sometimes an a$$hole instead of a good husband, crap. But I took a small blanket to bed last night. Even though we went to sleep late, I woke-up at a reasonable time and at least I had that covering me in the morning 🙂 It could have been a, "You sleep in the car for all I care," kind of night though, phew!

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

Anyway so Jake has sinus infection and pneumonia! I was coughing yesterday, but I think it was from exerting myself so much on that bike ride. Michelle was feeling bad too, sore throat, but the doctor said only some mucous, keep an eye on it in case it gets worse. Aga starting to feel better for real it seems this morning.
Last evening was good otherwise though. We did a wipeout/megamatch thing in our backyard again. The bad thing was that Jake got sad and cried that he got the shortest chalk in one challenge. he was sick and I can understand why he had a meltdown. But the neat thing is that Kevin found a dove in a tree in front of our house. It looks like there is a nest! That's exciting, very pretty blue around the eyes.

2. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

As for plans for the weekend, I'm going to go with Racin to help put together his racecar tomorrow! I'm really happy about that. Of course I need to hear back from him it's okay on account of the illnesses in our house. Also there is a small chance Aga might get called into work or that I might get sick myself, but I'm optimistic again today!
The key thing, I thought it was bad key material until I read online. Turns-out it's "the gorilla spring." (I love the funny terminology that Volvo guys create.) So it's pretty hard to press from on to start on these ignitions and eventually it causes this. Another funny thing is that with a key in there, you can pull-out the ignition pretty easily (takes some contortion only really) and then you can use a screw driver. That's strangely appealing to me 😉

Hi Tower,
That's not my pic though, shame on me for making you think that! We made an obstacle course outside. So up the ladder, sown the slide, slalom around some chairs, do a flip on the trampoline, then carry a ball on a shovel around a tree and to the finish line. Then we had chalk races on the driveway. Jake was in third, had a big head start, Michelle in second a bit less. Finally it was who can catch more popcorn tossed in the air with their mouth, Michelle won. We like that show too, Jill Wagner (from Mercury ads) is in it!

Good morning Skaycog,
Jake is doing much better. He went to swimming practice even on Sunday. I think I did not get sick myself, felt not great for part of Saturday but now I am good. I was taking a lot of guiaffesen or however it is spelled to keep my sinuses draining, that helps. Yesterday I worked on a doggy door for Max. I am not finished though since I need a tool I think I lent to my dad. Aga got the doggy door from her aunt but it was way too tall for our door. So I took it all apart and cut it shorter. What I thought was plastic was glass though. It only had a plastic outer film for the frosted look. Other than Saturday, on Friday i worked with the boys on those planes after work, and yesterday I played with the kids games like Indian War, hot potato, musical chairs, etc.

It sounds like everyone in your family is pretty healthy now. Hopefully all the colds and flu are a thing of the past now. Allergy sniffles are pretty bad now with the pollen. I don't have much of a problem…..just a little sneezing in the mornings.

I'm really happy that when it happened we all stayed calm, especially Aga. It would have been really so much harder to get home in time for the kids if she had been upset and yelling at me. I thanked her for that. I do things like that to try and drain the energy from the kids before bedtime, sometimes it even work 😉 Usually they just are extra bouncy after when it is time for bed. The games last night were an attempt like that as well. I had a great Saturday especially, how was your weekend?

I don't know if you told us about the mouse that got in from the garage. Tell us.
I had a mouse under my kitchen sink a couple of years ago. The builders didn't caulk around a pipe coming into the crawl space, and they didn't caulk around the drain pipe under my sink. I saw the droppings, so I bought one of those mousetraps that doesn't like decapitate them. Then when the little mouse was trapped in it, I called a neighbor guy to come and dispose of it. I don't know what he did with it, and I don't really care.

Hi Skaycog,
It's going to be a busy day, sigh. Thanks for sending that image to Vavon. I think it's a 403 so i bet he will get a little kick out of it 😉 I did not think I was going to have time to go on jalopnik last night, but I did have a moment. I saw in oppo a fellow asking for car advice for a wedding and he wanted a type II near Toronto. I was going to congratulate the couple and recommend to him a cabrio type I that I know about near there, but I simply could not reply! It was very frustrating, I used all my free time trying to be helpful. What a piece of garbage that site software or the hardware it runs on is, I have no idea, but it is not good.
Anyway the mouse story ends-up pretty sad, don't read it if you don't want to. So we had a mouse, we discovered it since it was eating dry foods in the pantry. I tried to use humane traps, but they did not work, always the peanut butter was eaten and no mouse. I think that the tail of the mouse must have been getting caught and so she was able to back out after it closed. So I had to use a regular trap. She was a cute but hungry little field mouse. Actually I have no idea if she was female, at least she was not a pregnant female, then I guess I would have had no sympathy and called her a vermin.

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

So I needed to find-out how she was getting in. I followed the droppings, it was extremely convoluted, but it made sense. I had read that mice use their whiskers and at night do not see well. They simply follow edges to get around. So I followed from the cupboard (or is it called a pantry?) to inside some cabinets, then under the sink, then behind the dishwasher, then behind some more cabinets, then along two walls, two sliding door, into the laundry room, behind the washer and dryer, and finally a hole into the garage.
But that hole had no opening in the garage I could see. In fact it was a path behind the wall of the garage in a space between 2x4s! I eventually followed two walls in the garage and found another hole. Near that hole was her nest, it was behind a piece of floor board. And here is what made me sad, there were all the typical net things you would expect, like chewed-up wood and cardboard to be soft, but also a gold necklace that Aga had lost. The mouse must have found it in the laundry room, decided it was shiny and neat, and dragged it back to her nest. So that made me sad then, I then knew that a little creature like that could have some small thoughts and wants at least beyond food, shelter, reproduction, etc.
man that was downer, sorry,
7119
PS: I was too scared to weigh myself this morning. Aga made the best hamburgers (which is really saying something cause she's made some great ones before) and a chocolate, fudge, and cherries cake! You are what you eat, I must be delicious, I'd better stay away from predators.

zms, zsm, moo……..Field mice are cute, but anything that poops in my house is nasty. I don't mind other people killing them, I just have had to kill one myself, but I guess I could. That's really something about the gold necklace…..I didn't know mice would do that. Pack rats are famous for that, and I guess squirrels will too. Interesting.

Hi Tower,
I'm glad you had a nice relaxing weekend. I have not played Life since I was a kid and Risk we had to stop playing since Aga and I would get so into it. If we hadn't stopped we may have divorced! Some day us four should get together and play board games. We are now back to playing Lost Cities the most.
I had a great weekend myself, Saturday was the best though. I got to see Mike "The Legend" Vallow in action. He called me "The Sponge" cause he thought I was absorbing everything said and did, hee hee hee! This morning I saw that Racing replied to Skaycog about it, so I'm not stealing his thunder here now, phew. So I don't know if you know Racin, the guy we are all replying here to this 50. He has an open wheel race car and races on dirt tracks! He got his engine rebuilt and had the car at Mike's speed shop. We and two other guys got to the speed shop to put the drive train in. It was all great for me, I'm not much help, but I had a great time. Right away I almost dropped a tool on Eric's head 🙁 It was funny, little things like there was a fuel leak to the pressure gauge. Turns-out a T had been cross threaded. But Mike just sawed off that part and tapped a threaded hole in it where he fitted an adapter. All the time racing folk kept coming into the speed shop, lots of talking, it was great. I learned SO much too.
Here's another funny thing, I got this poster calendar while there, I snuck it upstairs and hung it next to our bed when I got home late at night, Aga noticed the next morning, ha!
<img src="http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/2563/negative.png">
(Had to edit, look what it started looking like this morning!)
Oh my dad, he's known for just standing up, walking over with a shoe, and dispatching rodents. It's the way he does it, he learned if he let's my mom know beforehand, she goes hysterical. During this time he carries on whatever he had been doing, like having conversation or watching TV, so my mom does not pick-up on it that there is a critter in the house or she will freak-out. Really, freak-out does not do it justice – grab people, even little kids, push them away, climb-up furniture screaming, etc.

On a lighter note…my girlfriend made these little personal pizza's the other day. They are just soft tortellia shells, heated until crisp, with barbeque sauce and pineapples on top. They were delicious! And apparently they came from the Biggest Looser cookbook!

TowerofPower……Yum, that pizza looks delicious and how easy that is! I'll have to try it, since I don't do much in the way of cooking.
I Googled raccoon meat, etc. Apparently, it is the other dark meat. I think I'll pass on that one. Here is a paragraph from Wiki:
"AS FOOD
While primarily hunted for their fur, raccoons were also a source of food for Native Americans and Americans and barbecued raccoon was a traditional food on American farms. It was often a festive meal. Raccoon was eaten by American slaves at Christmas, but it was not necessarily a dish of the poor or rural; in San Francisco's The Golden Era of December 21, 1856, raccoon is among the specialties advertised for the holiday, and US President Calvin Coolidge's pet raccoon Rebecca was originally sent to be served at the White House Thanksgiving Dinner. The first edition of The Joy of Cooking, released in 1931, contained a recipe for preparing raccoon.
Because raccoons are generally thought of as endearing, cute, and/or varmints, the idea of eating them is repulsive to mainstream consumers. However, many thousands of raccoons are still eaten each year in the United States. Although the Delafield (Wisconsin) Coon Feed has been an annual event since 1928, its culinary use is mainly identified with certain regions of the American South like Arkansas where the Gillett Coon Supper is an important political event."

Not much going on around here……just that nasty wind. The temps are to be in the high 70's, so that will help.

I'm glad to here that your friend is doing well. Thanks for the kind words about the cakes. I just looked for some other pictures like of the cityscape and horse, but could not find them. I bet that those pictures my parents have on their computers/camera.
Today was great! We went to Starved Rock State Park. We took Max too. The kid (and I too) really enjoyed climbing on everything. Then when we got back I did some work on the water in the hot tub to get it all perfect and did a valve adjustment on the Volvo, success! It sounds SO much better now. I had never done anything like this before and thanks to Mike "The Legend" Vallow I knew what to do. He let me feel what the feelers should feel like when he was adjusting the valve lash on G73. On Saturday I am supposed to take Kevin and a friend to a Cubs game, I'm glad I have Astrid running better now. I'll write more tomorrow to Tower and you.

Hi Tower,
That little pizza looks great. Here's one we had in Japan. They made it "American style" for us. Yes those are hot dogs, hee hee:
<img src="http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_6jgCsQ8C8nU/SuNcp5R1SQI/AAAAAAAAAVM/eDQBAZusTbw/s500/DSC02329.JPG">
I sent Aga an email that I want to go to coon fest, not reply. I did some googling and it seems that they have it at the American Legion but the last couple of years it has happened in January. I cannot find online when it happened this year, so maybe we are in luck. If you are serious you should call them, they might know.
Also the game Lost Cities isn't really an exploration game. I think the game is by Reiner Knizia (or something spelled like that) and all his games have a theme, but in this case and a lot of others like it the mechanics of the game have nothing to do with the theme. In fact if you had a 5th suit (there is something called a star deck) you could play it with that. It is a great game though. You used to be able to buy/test it for xbox360. But when Activision bought Sierra or Vivendi or something like that there was some mix-up with rights to some things and it got pulled. It was annoying to me since I had bought the game but my xbox360 broke and when it was fixed I was unable to download it again. Anyway there is also an online version for computer but I think everyone thta plays uses German to communicate so that's tricky too 😉
You can modify the rules to Settlers of Katan for two players, maybe that's good? Check out the rules to Zarathema or something like that for the details on how to do it. That's the closest to a 2-player exploration game that I've played and liked. Ticket to Ride is great too, again not exploration, but the theme and gameplay go together well. You are trying to connect cities with rail. I would say get the Europe version. It is very good for two players but also has some nicer touches that make it better if you play with 4 or 5. The USA version is great to start, the most simple, but it's very easy to make one route and then your opponent has to go way around. This gets to be a problem with more than 2-players. My favorite game though is another card game, Odin's Ravens.

Oh yeah, there are a lot of great tile laying games, again not really exploration, but The Castle is great for 2-player since it has some little tweaks to make it extra fun for 2-players. There are all sorts of versions though, you can get the basic game instead and then there expansions and what not.

Hi Skaycog,
I got a late start today since I noticed the COTD yesterday. It got me a great mood this morning though. So I drove in and when I got to the security booth the guard said, "It's like a freaking car show here today." I asked what he was talking about and he pointed to a parking lot. There was an old car. So I drove over and parked by it. It looked like a '59 impala to me, but when I got out it said Biscayne. I took some pictures, one of the guys I work with said it's a '61, "That's the car I learned to drive standard on." His grandmother had one, it had a 3 on the tree. Neat, I can't find my camera cable here at work, so I'll have to upload the pictures later. I hope it does not do anything more than rain today though, I did park in the really far way lot though to be next to that car, so if they do salt here it will not be much for me. Long walk though, it was worth it though. I bet the other owner will get a kick out of what parked next to him too. Anyway except for a lot of work it's been a great morning.

So the plans for the weekend are not really set right now. I know there is the baseball game and Jake has a soccer game. We thought that soccer season was going to start a week later on account of spring break, whoops. We might not even have enough kids for two games. Anyway, one of the moms is a friend of Aga's. Her friend's husband is a coach for a brother of one of our kids. So he said he would coach in my place. But I still have not been able to get in touch with the mom or dad of the kid that is going with us to the baseball game. I wanted to take train but I don't know if they want to have their son in my old car yet even. Otherwise Aga might have to go in my stead and drive them in her car. Also Aga agreed to watch another friend's kids that evening, so maybe Aga drives and picks us up from the train station, or they pick us up, etc. You see it's getting complicated 😉

Starved Rock is called that since the story goes that the Illinois and Potowatomi Indians starved another tribe of indians up there after they had killed chief Pontiac. Now it use to be that the place was a privately owned vacation destination and that story may not be 100% true in fact. Like there was a place called Lover's Leap and the French Canyon, etc. Archeologists did some excavation there and results were inconclusive. Also there used to be a very old fort there and across the waterway is a lock. It's a pretty place though and Aga has a ton of pictures that I am sure will be on her blog soon.

Hi Scaycog,
Did you have a good weekend? You always seem to. I did, but I'll write about that later. Anyway so I parked near that Biscayne, it was in a completely unusual spot. Later I got a call from Aga, turns-out she was checking if I was around. She drove to work to try and find my car. She was going to prank me for April Fools day, but she could not find my car, shew looked all over, ha! Anyway I did not find-out who owns that car. In fact I went in the closest building to ask. The lady behind the desk did not know. I had a great idea. If I found the owner I was going to ask if I could play a prank for April Fools, that I had bought another old car. Like I call and ask Aga how much money can take out of the bank, take it out, and then drive over during lunch pretending I had bought it for her 😉

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

I did not get to play any prank though on Aga. Her prank-dar was on high all day. In fact even at 12:30AM she had told me I was not going to fool her this year. But she was so thinking I was going to trick her that she thought I was when I wasn't. I sent her an email regarding "Title: Bikes, Biking Bikology" and asked her to put it in the calendar in the kitchen so that I would not forget about it. Instead she replied "I AM SO NOT FOOLING FOR YOUR JOKES TODAY!!!!!!" because she read it as something about bikinis! Like a presentation about bicycle safety given by women in bikinis or something, ha! She was like that all day, every little thing she assumed was a prank.

1. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
mr. mzs zsm msz esq

So anyway (one more) I tried to prank my mom this year, but I messed it up. I don't know if know this already but I have a crazy plan. Someday I would like the difference in age of Aga's car and my car to be 111 years. I also want to own a car from every decade into the '20s before I die. I figure about every 7 years getting a car from another decade will do it. So my mom rolls her eyes everytime she hears more about my cockamamie plan. Aga told my mom that I had bought another old car. She did not believe it, so I put those pictures on facebook with a title like '59 Biscayen and then was going to send a "bottled message" (like a PM) to her with "new car!" Unfortunately I scr3ewed-up (to be fair facebook is pretty confusing to a dumb monkey like me) and put it as a caption to one of those pictures. Argh. Before I could figure-out how to fix that people started replying, dang. So I had to correct it but of course then my mom could see that it was not really mine anymore.

I tried to fool my girlfriend too on April 1st but she is always on the lookout. I did manage to get her though (with the help of Google!). She is a graphic designer and I guess graphic designers hate the font Comic Sans. So Google was running this article explaining how they were switching all of their search engine fonts over to Comic Sans because, according to some phoney study that Google made, Comic Sans actually increased readership and made people happier! I sent her the article from Google below and she actually bought it! When she picked me up from work she went on about how it made no sense that Google could do such a thing. I couldn't hold back my laugh and then had to explain myself. It was fun!

Hi BB!
I hope you had a great birthday, Tower just had one too. That video is incredibly scary, whoa! It did not happen to you or anyone you know did it? That could have been very very bad if it was a bit to the side. On Thursday something similar happened to Kevin's friend's family. They were driving and a truck in front of them flung up a chunk of tire from another truck up into their windshield. It did not get into the car though, just made a basketball sized patch of broken glass.
When Kevin was an infant something fell out of the back of a truck ahead of us, maybe it was a couch. Though it was far enough away that I swerved around it. But it fell to pieces and some wood pieces flew back as well. We were lucky then. Also seniors finished school early one day and my mom was driving to pick me up from school so that I would not need to wait for the bus. On the way to the school a kid threw a water balloon at her van and about a third of the front windshield came apart. Luckily she did not panic and crash.
