Why the 2022 Kia Sedona Minivan Matters

I know, not everyone is into new stuff, and I’m not saying that a minivan is necessarily hoon-worthy, but what Hyundai and Kia are doing lately is impressive. Pretty much everything I’ve driven from Hyundai and Kia over the past couple of years has been good to great, but this 2022 Sedona (called the Carnival elsewhere) really caught my eye for a big reason.

It legitimately looks like an SUV.

There’s a pretty solid likeness to the Tahoe and Suburban, especially from the side. This isn’t a huge surprise since I’ve always thought the Telluride looks like a GMC Yukon. And you’ve got to see the inside!

Expect the typical Hyundai/Kia 3.5L V6 engine with around 290 horsepower and overall vehicle size is up by an inch or two (that’s what she said?!). If Kia can finally convince SUV buyers to take the minivan plunge with this new styling, they’ll find that it’s a massively flexible platform. It can go from long-distance family-hauling to Home Depot duty better than just about anything. This thing could absolutely print money. So keep an eye out for future Hooniminivan content, it’s the new car content I know you have so desperately been looking for.

Also, they should call it the Kia Carnival here too, that makes me smile for some reason.

Well, I’m out of the closet as a Hyundai/Kia apostel anyway, and my minivan was probably the smartest vehicle I’ve ever had. So this looks great to me, especially with that nice V6. What really excites me is the lively interior though, are we finally getting a worthy successor to Volvo’s Atacama?

As a driver of the current Kia Sedona, I can agree with you that the 2022 design is definitely more SUV-like. Honestly, the only thing I have against the Telluride is that it lacks sliding rear doors, a feature that I honestly wish all four-door vehicles had. And that interior looks great. My Sedona has the 3.3L V6, but I would expect the new one to get the Telluride’s 3.8.

The only big negative in my opinion is that c-pillar design. Personally, I wouldn’t draw attention to that detail as they’ve done here. I’d rather it be contoured and colored so that it blends in, rather than standing out. I do, however, like the shoulder line that circles the entire car and ties the tail lamps with the head lamps.

Brilliant design to that second row. Make kids feel special–every ride to school is just like a visit to the dentist.

And then there is the higher third row window line so the littlest anklebiters can’t see out!
