Weekend Edition: Old German cars on a Slovenian street

A Slovenian friend of mine, Aleš shot these classic German cars in his town of Maribor the other day. Both of them are in need of light restoration, even if they’re durable enough to trundle around the streets in the condition in which they are now.

The Mercedes-Benz W115 200 looks to be in original condition, and the stance is probably down to some very old springs. It’s been touched up and resprayed a few times, most likely.

The brown interior looks excellent, it’s seemingly worn very well. You could get these with column shift, too, but this one has the four-on-the-floor.

The rust and signs of touch-up work would merit a complete re-do.

This BMW E12 is more of a mystery. The badge on the front says 525…

And the trunklid says 518. Which one is correct?

Note the motorsport-coloured slats inside one kidney.

Which one would you take and bring home to make it right?

Hmm, I believe when one sees two sets of model designations on a BMW it’s always safe to ignore the higher trim one, especially when sporting “M” add ons.
Fun fact about Slovenia/Kingdom of the Slovenes, their current national anthem is about as completely different from their 20th century anthem as possible. With the old one espousing effectively the killing of anyone who isn’t of your group, and the new one basically saying peace on earth.

Mystery 5-series for me. Can’t see any real rust, I like the looks better (equally terrible color), and it’s all theoretical anyway! So I’m imagining the BMW has had a later-model straight 6, completely upgraded suspension & brakes, and rocks a 5MT.

I like the headlight mod on the Mercedes.

Those are the stock headlights. Anyway, I too think they have a nice look to them–especially with the integrated fog lights.

I think the BMW is in fact a 518 because those models apparently didn’t have a badge on the grille (unlike the 520 and up). By the way, I would need an interior shot of the BMW to make up my mind:-)

Thin deck, compared to other features. But I do adore the wheels on that BMW.
