Welcome to another Hooniverse Weekend. This time I thought I would showcase some of the entries that have appeared within the pages of a couple of my favorite Facebook Titles, namely the Ornch Car Cult, and Wagons HO!. Let’s start with this very delightful Mercury Bobcat from 1978…

We all know the Mercury Bobcat was nothing but a better trimmed Ford Pinto, but does that make us want it any less? They were offered in the US between March of 1975 right up until production ended in 1980. Only the three door hatchback and wagon were offered and there were 224,026 produced. Here is a relatively low mileage example offered on Craigslist, and it has the option of the 2.8L Cologne V-6.

This is a 1978 Mercury Bobcat. It has the rare 6 cyclinder motor and automatic transmission. The car was originally from california. It runs and drives really good and it has only 54000 miles. This is a fast fun little car. This car has most of the original parts other than tires which are new and a new radiator. The interior is an good shape. The paint is faded in spots. This car has minimal rust for its age.

Asking price for this Pinto in drag is $3,500. Do you think this car is worth this amount of coin, and would you want to cal it yours? See the listing here, and tell me how you really feel.

The seat fabric on the driver's seat looks a little different. Weird.

Why oh why is the Ornch Car Cult a hidden & closed group? Every time I see reference to something lovely that was posted there, I follow the link, hoping in vain that it might be visible to all. Sigh.

Seconded! I can't find them on FB. It is a secretive cult, like the Stonecutters.

Of course, how could I have missed this. I must now affix the stone of shame to my car.

Maybe a V6 and manual trans would make this car point towards 'fun'.
But that era automatic is a dog. 🙁
    Diggin' the Wolfrace wheels though.

Anyone who ever sat in or drove a later years, 74 onward, Pinto or Bobcat knows they have driven some of the absolute worst driving and uncomfortably sitting cars of all time. A Trabant is WAY more comfortable and better driving. Add insult to injury with the "doubled up" Pinto taillights and boom, you have it!: In your face, insultingly low quality and downright dangerously bad driving cars. Seats that refuse to go back far enough for anyone over 5'7", and forget tilting seat backs: Bolt Upright and close to the wheel and pedals. The '71-'72, base cars with a manual were somehow tolerable, if not up to Euro or Japanese standards, but the '74 onward with the bumpers and more horrible colors, took the prize of badness in my book that is hard to beat. That said, the 72's or 73's, I forget, had a nice optional 2L 4 and slick shifting close ratio four speed that made the rest of the car look even worse by comparison.

When I saw the seats I had a "Shut up and take my money!" moment. If the Bobcat is good enough for The TIck it's good enough for me, I just wish it was a wagon.. oh well…

Any guesses what kind of mileage this pavement burner / canyon carver gets?

I owned a '71 1600 that was rusted right through the floor in 1977–that I paid $120 for! It was my winter beater when the '65 Fury wedge post coupe was in storage. Sold it to a huge biker for $170 two years later. That same year I was going out with a girl that had a '75 Pinto given to her new by her parents. I opened the passenger door–and it fell on the ground! The hinges had already rusted off the body. In the mid-'70's it was so bad you could hear the rust if you put your ear to the fender………
I love the orange and the Bobcat. The 6 with the auto not so much. A four is the only real Pinto experience. That and gas tank explosions.
