Weekend Edition – 1992 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign

If the Cadillac posted previously was an odd sight in 1990s Finland, a Jaguar Sovereign like this might have been just a little more opulent. The plates here do mark it down as an import instead of an original, Finnish-registered 1992 car, but a decent number of XJ40:s did make it here new.
With the four-litre six, I wouldn’t mind trying out one of these on these Helsinki cobblestone streets.

A dirty and brake dusty Jaguar is almost cooler than a well-kept and cleaned one. It hints of the possibility of not actually giving a damn when hauling the Sovereign around.

The aftermarket wheels are an obvious substitute for the original metric specification ones, so no harm done there. My money is on this being a German import, and lippy wheels like these could easily be of German taste.

My abiding memory of encountering cobbles for the first time isn’t how they affected ride or induced noise, but how slippery they were when wet. What are they like with snow?

I live on a cobble stone street, and snow seem to fill the gaps first so it’s smoother but as slippery as snowy or icy road is (depends how many cars have driven on said street).
Owner of that Jaaag is one brave man/woman. These are one of the worst Jaguars ever made. Upkeep: just throw money to the never ending fire.

As the owner of both a Lancia Gamma, a Rover 800 and Citroen CX and BX, even I know to avoid these cars. But the problems are pretty much all electrical, like my 800. In the near future these XJ40s might become rare and kept going by cannibalising the later better built X300s.
I still want an earlier Series lll, preferably a V12

These series III cars are one of the best looking vehicles ever made.

I agree wholeheartedly. And with the Jaguar spell in full effect, even pretty ones come surprisingly cheap…

Dallas got cute with some intersections on the 75 frontage road. A few times I skidded a few feet to the lights knowing I didn’t have full traction.
6 months later those stone had been ground down flat.

To be honest- I’d stay away from a car with B-RF plates.
    Edit: Better yet, BRF-FIN.

One of the worst cars ever made. Seeing one in Finland is doubtless a bit odd, but seeing one anywhere now is a bit of an event since most of them have completely fallen apart at this point.
And I’m saying this as someone who has repeatedly given serious thought to owning a Series III.

Two men (Okay, three counting me) being lured to their doom by the lure of the Sirens. Was there ever another such a combination of beauty and evil? Perhaps the Maserati Quatroporte comes closest…..

Too much going on, too much styling, too much voloptuousness with the Quattroporte
Unless it’s the one, (of two), that was built for the Aga Kahn and has recently been sold at auction. http://www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk/alfieri125a.htm

Who do you see buying these new in Finland? In Germany, almost every non-mainstream choice would have gotten them the “pimp”-stamp…including this pretty gem.

Anglophile businessmen, contrarians….maybe even quite normal rich guys. When that XJ arrived 1986, 126 Merc was very old and E32 BMW, while brand new, was more of a yuppie car.
But this is a 1992 car and by then there was huge tank- S class MB many people didn’t like.
This Jag is good looking IMO, I’d prefer those big glassblock headlights some versions have as quads seem somehow forced in that boxier body.

Those wheels lend the old Jag just the right amount of “Budget Gangster”

XJ40 5 x 120 PCD stud pattern are happily the same as BMW and their vast aftermarket choice. Those wheels probably started their life on a 5 series.
