This is very low on the long list of vehicles that I’d opt to take around Germany’s Nürburgring. It’s a Land Rover Discovery and it’s more at home on dirt roads… or in strip-mall parking lots. That’s of no matter to the man behind the wheel, however, as he clearly knows this circuit and how to get a vehicle around it. Any vehicle.

The Discovery starts out and quickly passes a Nissan GT-R as it sets off on what must be another trip around the ‘Ring. A few track-prepped Porsche 911s roar on by, but the second one doesn’t pull away as easily as you might expect. The Discovery keeps it in view for far longer than it has any right to do so. What’s more amazing is that the Discovery is reportedly shod with winter tires. It’s already bound to understeer, and now doubly so.

Regardless, the Disco driver dances on and shows off true skill behind the wheel. And he takes full advantage of the off-road capability of the Land Rover. Curbs are soaked up. Corners are clipped on occasion. But it’s primarily a very clean lap of a difficult and incredibly long circuit. And it’s all dispatched calmly, cooly, and far more quickly than you would otherwise guess.

This is probably one of the fastest laps around the ‘Ring for any Land Rover Discovery. Who has gone quicker? Who would even try?
