Wagon Wednesday: Bus-Plunge Spots A Cherry '58 Nomad

By this point in time, this olelongrooffan suspects that my fellow Hoons are aware that not a whole lot of stuff happens in this olelongrooffan’s life without there being a story attached. And if, in fact, my fellow Hoons realize this, you will not be surprised to know there is a story attached to the above image. However, my fellow Hoons are required to make the jump to capture the story about this longroof, this Mom and those Hoonayoungsters.

This olelongrooffan has often waxed on about how I come from a proud lineage of Hoons, starting with my dad, TheGentlemanFarmer, older brothers, BBB (click on the video in that link for a hoot or two), Bus-Plunge and thehorsefarmer continuing down to my little, but bigger, brother, thejeepjunkie. Heck, even BabySister is a Hoon. And thejeepjunkie’s son, theKid,, he is an aspiring Hoon as well. And in addition to being proud Hoons, we all seem to be blessed with the ability to spin a pretty decent yarn.

Last week the massive communications system this olelongrooffan possesses lights up and it is Bus-Plunge all excited about catching sight of this 1958 Chevrolet Nomad. He spotted it and even talked to the owner of it. The remainder of this post is the email this olelongrooffan received from him relating the experience to me and now to my fellow Hoons.

longroof:

Last week my debit card was declined whenever I would attempt to use it. At first I thought it was just the card was worn out but it didn’t work at the grocery store, the gas pumps, the pool supply store, the hardware store, — unauthorized user, transaction cancelled.

July_4,_2013_044

The last time this happened I was close to the main branch of my bank so I went there. The teller told me and the letter I received that same day said, “my debit card may have been compromised due to the possible security breach of a US-based merchant’s computer network….due to the nature of this security breach and to prevent any unauthorized charges from occurring, we have deactivated your card.”

July_4,_2013_049

“In seven to ten days you will receive a new card and PIN. Any automatic withdrawals you have using your debit card will need to be reestablished with the new debit card number. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

July_4,_2013_046

When I was coming out of the bank, this 1958 Chevrolet Nomad station wagon pulled in, lady driver and two kids in the back seat.

July_4,_2013_050

I went over to her and, ala Longrooffan, introduced myself and asked if I could photograph her car. Clarissa said yes. She went into the bank with the kids and came out shortly. I told her about you.

July_4,_2013_052

She and her husband had a hot rod that was featured in Hot Rod magazine about 11 years ago. Another car at the same shoot was a customized 58 longroof.

July_4,_2013_055

She and her husband liked it and found this car out at the fairgrounds swap meet that summer 11 years ago. Since then, as Clarissa said, ‘everything you can’t see’ has been redone.

July_4,_2013_045

Look at the motor compartment!

July_4,_2013_054

I told her the patina on the car was great! She said she appreciated that comment as most people ask her when will the car be finished.

July_4,_2013_056

I told her it looked perfect to me.

July_4,_2013_047

Even the license plate has louvers!

July_4,_2013_043

I know you would appreciate the photos, that’s why I called you to tell you about it.

That's fantastic. It's always great when you get someone proud enough of their car to let you photograph it. Of course, I've also had people give me dirty looks, hurry to get in and drive away. If you don't like people admiring your car, leave it in the garage. Or sell it to someone who isn't a jerk.

She has a Hokey Ass Message Board sticker! There really are girls on car blogs!!

I have always wondered what H.A.M.B. stood for. I spotted that sticker right off.

I couldn't see it on the car…of course, that could be my eyes..

        Oh..I see it now..under the hood..over the master cylinder..sorry.

Those W series big blocks – especially with tri-power, are just a visual delight. Personally, the only change I'd make would be to swap out the steelies and white walls for a set of Cragar S/S or Keystone Klassics (I know, blasphemy with this crowd, but I just can't stand white wall tires and steel rims)

I'm guessing it's a 348 hooked to a Powerglide (it could be a Turboglide, but they're pretty rare), and someone has upgraded to a dual circuit master cylinder and power brakes, and added aftermarket a/c. The change I would make is to switch to an alternator. Those generators don't put out a lot of amps, and they're usually taxed to the limit with a/c, and the blower on high.

I noticed that too – but I wonder if they didn't set up one of those alternator disguised as a generator tricks, especially given the other mods (brakes, a/c, etc)?

I do see something below the generator, that could be an alternator, but I don't know why one would keep both. The power steering pump is driven off the back of the generator, which could be a reason to keep it, but if it were mine, I'd change the bracketry to run a ps pump and alternator, and get rid of the generator.

Seven to 10 days to get a new debit card? I'd revolt. My debit card has been "compromised" twice in two years, and both times my bank made a new card on the spot, and had it working the next day.

It happened to me about four months ago. The didn't cancel my old one, but they told me they would be watching for unusual charges. Still, took well over a week to get the new card.

Awesome story, man. Nice family, too, to let him not only take pictures of the car, but stand in for a portrait!

Oh boy. Here goes. Get ready to point your daggers and launch your arrows, 'cause I'm gonna say it. **If this were my car** (YMMV), in eleven years I would have gotten around to painting it. I LOVE '58 Chevy wagons. This one has (had?) a nice color scheme. I also LOVE well loved original cars and I much prefer same, flaws and all, to trailer queens. However, I look at this and I just see an otherwise nice car in need of a paint job. I'm sorry.

I kind of agree, kind of don't. I'm conflicted. Some cars deserve to wear their scars as badges of honour, if they're genuine, which I think these are.
On the other hand, artificial patination wins zero kudos from me. Cool story, though, and always great to meet people like these.

I would have added ghost flames over the patina..but hey, that's just me. I would NOT change the wheels however.

alternator's under the generator. Left the gen there to run the steering pump. Well done.

Very cool. Jimmy and Claricia are great folks. Looking forward to hanging out with them at the HAMB drags next weekend.
