Update From LeMons Arse-Freeze-apalooza: Tech Inspection Cleared, Insanity Begins Tomorrow!

[singlepic id=522 w=640 h=480 float=center]
Team Unknown Fluids has set up camp, cleared tech (after a few quick fixes) and done a few practice laps. For the the doubters out there, the wing’s holding up great (no idea if it’s actually producing downforce) and the we’ve got no cooling issues with the nosecone (that it’s 48 degrees outside doesn’t hurt). Hit the jump for a random batch of shots from tech.
There’s something like 160 cars starting tomorrow, which seems like pure lunacy until you realize they’re running the full 3+ mile course at Thunderhill (with no chicanes!), so there’s plenty of room to spread out. Of course, that introduces the lunacy of running the full course with no chicanes…but hey, a few of us were took the “Racing 101” seminar put on this evening by the OLDFARTS racing crew, so now we’re marginally less hopelessly clueless practically experts!
Actually…we just noticed we were too busy wrenching on the Uberbird to take any picture of it, but oddly enough, we know The Saucy Minx over at Jalopnik’s got a few great shots of it and a post in the queue. Anyway, here’s what we were able to capture before we we suited up for our practice laps.
More pics tomorrow, as wifi, racing and time allow!

Um. ÜberBird? Where the hell are the shots of it?

      Squarely on the J
      And it looks incredible
      My hat is off

That's "My hat is off, sir."

Thanks, had the facepalm a couple of hours ago and couldn't come up with a good solution.

I would like to remind my fellow Hoons that not only would I love to daily-drive the Chevolvo, I wish to shake the hands of its creators and buy each of 'em a beer.
Assuming I ever meet 'em, that is. (Same goes for the Mustard Metal Volvo folks, naturally.)
Also, something is up with its wheels. What are they from, why did they bother to use them (since they aren't stock RWD Volvo wheels of any sort, they're obviously newer steelies) and what sort of spacers do they have? Or have they swapped the rear axle (can't see the front wheels in either shot)? Shenanigans!

They resemble wheels I've seen on older Foresters, if memory serves me correctly; that's assuming that the 240 has a 5×100 lug pattern, and also allowing for the possibility that I am completely wrong.

Yep, Subaru Forester wheels. Carpool mate has one.

Those were my first thought, too – my grandfather has one as a winter driver, supplementing his Sable wagon – but they don't look quite right. See here. I thought of the new F150 steelies too, but again, no dice.
All Volvos newer than the Amazon are 5×108 (the Amazon was 5×115… I've seen 5×114.3 Ranger alloys on one…). Complicating matters, the 164E/2**/7*0/9*0 (through '94 or so) had a different offset – 20/25mm, give or take, as opposed to 35/40mm on the newer cars (and the 140, iirc) – meaning that only wheels intended for these cars, as well as (I believe) some Ferrari wheels, will bolt on without spacers/adapters.

I see couple of problems here, some questions:
    – will those people really race nice 1970 Alfa Coupe at LeMons?
    – why doesn't Das Überbird have Hooniverse stickers?
    – also, Überbird needs look more Superbird-ish, can't you paint black headlight "pods" to the new nose cone?
    – M-Benz Tank-Coupe W140 racer….wtf

    1. blueplate Avatar

Yes, surely some of these are just the cars that brought y'all trackside right?
But then, the "3.14" econobox looks like you could straight buy it for $500 .. wth is that anyway?
The galleries of parking lots at LeMons are usually as good as the racecars– you know these people are in the hoon demographic! (Besides, if you're headed to LeMons, are you going to bring the 1970 Alfa Coupe or the DD 2007 family car? Correctamundo!)

      1. Manic_King Avatar

I think this Alfa is actually chief perp Lamm's car, Murilee mentioned it in the last week's PCH post or in comments over at J.

        1. blueplate Avatar

With this week's big rapprochement (or is it a détante?), is the [Redacted] meme now dead and buried?

          1. CptSevere Avatar

I was wondering the same thing. Looks like everybody kissed and made up. I guess we can use the J word here now.

          2. Tomsk Avatar

That'd be nice. Teh Interwebz is definitely big enough for multiple car blogs specializing in the obscure and the awesome.

      2. FuzzyPlushroom Avatar

It's a G-Wiz, as in "G-Wiz, I hope I can leave this gig mopping up G-Wiz off the floor of these porno booths and get a real job and car".

    2. Armand4 Avatar

The Alfa belongs to Chief Perp Jay. The outside is all painted with Hammerite spray paint, but the inside is really, really nice. Having followed it on the freeway, I can verify that it's very fast as well.

  4. JeepyJayhawk Avatar

Someone brought a TH!NK to race? Is it still electric?

    1. Bentoboxx Avatar

Thats a G-Wiz and its the support vehicle for Team Heisenberg….the Marvin Martian peeps with the BMW. Its handy for towing the Bimmer or for getting more beer at 27 mph

      1. blueplate Avatar

Well, I had to chuckle, a "G Wiz" google searched produced the following results that were a little higher than the G-Wiz electric car:

        • Club G-Wiz
        • , a "Club" on the west side of Detroit City

        • G-Wiz science museum in Florida, and
        • G-Wiz, an electronics company for toys, hobbies and model rocketry

        .
        Seems somehow fitting.

      2. JeepyJayhawk Avatar

I hope the liquor store is close. Great choice of pit runner, though I am a bit surprised that it can tow anything at all.

Has anyone heard from the Das Uber Team? I haven't looked at [Redacted] so…

    1. Tim Odell Avatar
      Tim Odell

Saw them with a lot of mud on the their tires a few times through the weekend. Seems like they had other issues, too.
Final results are done, but I don't think they're on mylaps yet.

I strayed on here a few weeks back and I truly cannot get enough! Please keep writing!
