Stuck Unimog gets rescued by an Alfa Romeo

This video is amazing for two reasons. First is that someone actually managed to get a Unimog stuck in what looks like freshly plowed powder snow, somewhere in the Italian Alps. To get a Umimog stuck is a special kind of accomplishment. The damn thing has huge off-road tires, locking differentials, portal axles, and other off-road goodies. Read more about Unimogs here.
The second reason is that a Police Alfa Romeo 159 is actually able to pull it out of the snow! I am guessing that the Alfa is an all-wheel-drive model and possibly riding on snow tires.
The truth is that crazy power or magic was not really needed here. All the Unimog needed was a little momentum, probably just enough to get moved off the snow that was under the axles and allow its tires to get some traction, and then it pulled itself out.

Wow, this was just two days ago. They’ve been experiencing quite a bit of snow around Abruzzo, and I read this morning that an avalanche has buried a hotel/resort, with at least 30 people missing. Their FB page has pictures of stuff like a canopy at a Total station collapsed under the weight of snow, and a profile pic that says, “Pray for Abruzzo”:

Between this and the earthquakes, Italy has been getting really beaten up. 🙁

Close to 80 inches (200cm) of snow. Here’s the resort at Rigopiano that was buried by snow. Lots of people in the region isolated.

Somehow, so far, we’ve been lucky to keep the earthquakes separate from the snow here in NZ. You can see the snow from Kaikoura where the last big earthquake struck but the Southern Alps are a long way off. Our sympathies and prayers go out to Italy.

All the truck had to do was turn his wheels to the left. No wonder he was stuck.
