mitsubishi montero off-road jump

So I jumped my Montero

I’ve been itching to test my recently installed suspension. My Montero has Fox 2.0 shocks at all four corners. And I want to, in the words of the kids, send it. There aren’t a lot of places open in California at the moment. All of the trail systems are shut down. So I can’t go to my usual spots for any potential sendage. Recently though, I had to shoot a video of a Jeep Wrangler. I found a bit of open dirt about 75 miles from my house and went in that direction. The Montero would serve as the camera car for the shoot.

After we got our last shot of the Jeep, I hopped into the Montero for a few runs through the dirt. There was one spot where I thought I could get some daylight under the tires. And so I did.

No, it’s not a soaring Trophy Truck style launch. But it is a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero that’s left the ground, and it returned in a smooth controllable manner. Nothing broke. I drove home in comfort. And my truck is still all together. I’d consider this a successful test of the shocks. Wouldn’t you?

One of my distinct memories of interning in a TV newsroom was when the graphics guy was building a slide for a story about a building fire. No fire is good, I suppose, but as far as fires go, this one was contained fairly quickly and the footage was a bit on the boring side. The graphics guy took a couple minutes looking for just the right frame to grab, when the flame licks had tripled in height for a few milliseconds.

That’s a little bit how I felt again watching the video–blink and you miss it–but the result is a fantastic still shot. Great work, Jeff.

I remember taking my 500 lb Africa Twin over the same jump I used to launch send (?) my 320 lb DRZ400. Ever been to an air show where they make a C-130 Hercules do a barrel roll?

It helps if you shout, “I am a Gazelle!”

Nice driving the other day in the LeMons event. You seemed to have the dirt-to-asphalt transitions dialed. I was impressed.

      Hey thanks!
I was definitely practicing for that one, and I’ve been running the Pro2 Lite a bit when not doing the Lemons stuff. That race was so much fun.
