Auto racing has always been pretty much a rich-man’s sport. Back when wealthy racers plied the tracks in their Ferraris and Maseratis, one guy thought there might be a cheaper way into that club. Bill Devin designed and sold race cars that were able to run tire to tire with the big dogs, but were built with good-ol’ American parts including honking big V8s and leaf-sprung Ford 9″ rearends.
Craigslist has a listing for a Devin racer that needs a whole lot of work, but is at an asking price well below what these cars go for when restored. The $20,000 buys you body and frame, but no drivetrain. There’s no history noted in the ad, nor much detail – in fact the seller (selling for a friend) isn’t even sure of the year.
Still, Devins – especially ones in this price range – don’t come around too often. This car has a straight, and apparently complete body. It’s certainly interesting and potentially desirable, but the question remains- if you bought it, what would you do with it?

I’d build a matching trailer, and take it with me when shopping at Costco or Home Depot. Make the trailer a pop-up and take it camping.

Wow, this could be a fairly inexpensive way to get into some vintage races. If you could get more on the history of this car from the owner and put together a well sorted, period correct drivetrain/wheels/paint color/etc. this could make for a really cool car.
I would totally do that and drive it in vintage races like the La Carrera Panamericana. Which is going on this weekend. I need to go.-
