Practical Performance Car Features 27L V12 Tank Engine Powered Rover, We Suggest New Title

One of these days we’ll do a tank-engined car showdown, and this Rover SD1 will be among the contenders. We could go on for a while, but PPC’s intro sums it up nicely:

One day back in the 1990s a middle-aged man from a sleepy village in Lincolnshire decided that he’d start a new project saloon car.
Over a decade and two marriages later PPC’s own Charlie Broomfield had a road legal matt black Rover SD1 powered by a 27-litre V12 Merlin tank engine.

It seems his goal is to take it up to 200mph. So there ya go. You need to head over to PPC, because they’re basically a UK version of Hooniverse. Seriously, check out their project cars page.

I remember seeing this a few years ago, when it was first starting out. The builder had some trouble registering the car for the road since the clerk kept putting 2.7 L for the displacement instead of 27 liters.

The first three project cars are escorts?!?! Yep, that place is awesome.

    I also like this E-Type

I kinda want to get an E-Type and drive it around with no front clip like that.

These crazy Brits also built a Rolls Royce for the track. Turbocharged.

Yeah, these guys are Hoons. No doubt about it.

They are definitely hoonish, as shown by their cooling system. Merlins are pretty temperature sensitive and the radiator on this thing probably holds as much fluid as a hot water tank.

If you guys could get funding I'd have no issue starting up a project car, I've got the resources (physically and mentally that is) I'd just need the idea and funding.

The back axle is from a Ford F150 pick-up truck, the drivetrain has parts from a Leyland Leopard bus…

    Well done, sir. Well done.

As a minor funny, the brits opted for parts commonality and used the Meteor to power the Mighty Antar tank transporter as well as the tanks it hauled.

Great. Just what I need. Another site to waste hours of my life reading about insane project cars and classics doing what they were intended to do.
/Heads back to PPC and puts the headphones on so he can't hear his wife yelling at him.

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
