Morning Qualifying – The Golden Age Edition

With apologies to the Group B fans, I’ve always preferred the pre-WRC rally era.   The cars were closer to stock, and the stages were frequently open. The crews did not have a chance to recce before driving that day’s stage.  The distances covered were often so large, as much as 500 miles in a day, that pace notes weren’t possible.  Maps were the only way to get from time check to time check.   The manufacturers offered little in the way of support.  Danger, in multiple forms, literally lurked around the next bend.  And sponsorship money wasn’t yet a gleam in a marketing man’s eye.
Being able to drive or navigate was only a small part of the job requirement.   You had to be a good mechanic, who could improvise on the fly.  You might need a strong back, or the ability to speak a 2nd or 3rd language.  And for all your efforts, there wasn’t much money to be had if you made it to the winner’s circle.  BUT, there was glory…..and the camaraderie of belonging to a small group of men and women with the skill to push a car harder and faster, over tougher terrain, than anyone else…….in the wurrld.
Which brings us to today’s video, produced by Ford, which will regale you with thrilling tales of rallying in late 1950’s and 1960’s and get you through that 1st cup of coffee. You wish you were there, don’t you.

    I've often considered installing an exoskeleton, similar to the one pictured on the Ford, onto my truck to assist with the morning commute.

    I know these three older guys that used to race Volvos. The stories that they have are incredible. You almost don't want to believe them, but then they or their wives show you even more incredible old photographs. So here's a good one that I heard when I had taken the gearbox from my Amazon to the chest a couple of times during a repair:
    One of the guys pulled an entire engine on the side of a gravel road. Well pulled is not the right term I guess. He had only hand tools. He jacked the front up, dropped the gear box, then the bell housing. At that point he figured that this cockamamie plan was actually going to work, so to make the engine lighter he took off the head. Then he went under and dropped the block on his chest. Oooooophff….
    My saying that when the gearbox hit me, it knocked the wind out of me a bit suddenly seemed pretty lame in comparision 😉 Anyway, these old timers are incredible, I love their stories.

      You, too? I once almost got my first car's transmission back into place before it slipped free, so I wound up pinned to the ground with it on my chest until I could get my breath back enough to make another, fortunately successful, attempt. So glad it had a three-speed manual instead of its original Ford-O-Matic at that point. Then again, I was always glad after it no longer had its original Ford-O-Matic.
