Morbid Curiosity: Watch a Diesel V8 TOTALLY Explode on a Dyno

Warning: some material may not be appropriate for those with sensitive dispositions, children, or diesel mechanics. If you may not be able to handle the violent disembowelment of a massively overworked diesel engine on a dynomometer, please do NOT click through to watch a video. You may use your MAN or Caterpillar hat to shield your eyes if you desire.

I agree with the comments that it’s probably a Scania V8 engine of some sort. Er, it was a Scania engine – now it’s a shell, devoid of the spark of life (or would it be “compression of life,” being a diesel with no sparkplugs?).
Thanks to Adam for the tip!

The part where the fluids dump out from what use to be the oil pan disturbs me.

      Same response here.
Any somewhat grainy, low-grade footage shot in a fluorescent-lit room like that puts me on edge from the get-go. Bad stuff always happens in videos shot like that.
Hell, bad stuff always happens in rooms like that. My handle's not just a clever line, btw…

It's like a scene from Saw or something, right? They set up an innocent engine on a torture device, and the result is engine dismemberment porn.

That right there is some hot metal-on-metal action.

It is an Engine Snuff movie. Very Disturbing.

I used to work at the Ford wind tunnels. One afternoon I was in the control room talking to the requester making sure he was getting everything when there was a loud *BANG* from the test cell. The engine — a prototype Powerstroke — had shot a piston through the block. The requester said keep it running and see how long it goes. We finally shut it off after 5 minutes of putting up with it's tortured noise.

awesome. that is why everyone needs a video camera of some sort

      1. engineerd Avatar

Unfortunately, camera phones are a big no-no and the in-cell cameras aren't hooked up to any sort of recorder.

    2. P161911 Avatar

I was amazed at the 5 seconds or so that this one kept running.

I want to see the postmortem. It wouldn't be hard – the dissection's already been taken care of.

A friend of mine has always wanted to make a TV show called Engine Autopsy – this would be a prime candidate.

I've been thinking lately… If Fox really thinks the Speed Channel needs it's own American Idol (Fast Track To Fame), why not it's own version of House, M.D. (maybe M.T; for ASE Master technician)?

  7. P161911 Avatar

OK, so we need to back off on the boost just a little bit.

Climbing up Tehachapi Pass in a long line of trucks many years ago, a bunch of white smoke (water/coolant in fuel) came back down the line instead of the usual black smoke. Somebody yelled "Trans-Con, you're burnin' the water!" over the CB immediately followed by "Yup, It's Over" in turn followed by a bang that sounded like a gunshot that I could hear out my open window. Everybody moved left, and then left some more over to the very edge of the freeway because when that sucker blew it covered both lanes with oil and tire-shredding shrapnel.
    I approve of this video.

I used to commute that pass every day. Some very bad things happen to engines and transmissions on that highway. It's only 6% and smoothly paved, but I guess it's the combination of the long climb and the heat that does it. Scary.

Best part? The Oil Changers ad that popped up in the YouTube player half-way through the video.

Stuff like this scares the crap out of me. I know the engineers are usually behind a fat piece of polycarbonate, but it would nevertheless take one HELL of a paycheck to get me within 500 feet of something like that. What scares me even worse is exploding brake rotors. It's like a phobia.

With the compression and boost these things run I knew it was going to be good…..bad….entertaining!

I saw stuff like that quite a few times with 4 cyl turbos when I worked at Chrysler. The best one was a piston crown that let go, let the con rod turn into a buzz saw, and cut the block almost in half. The resulting oil on manifold fireball cooked almost ever piece of instrumentation and wiring in the cell before the Carbox system went off and put it all out.
