Last Call- Zen and the Art of. . . Edition

The upside of wearing monk’s robes and nothing else while riding a sport bike? Testicular cooling. The bad side? Sacred beetles to the crotch at 80 miles per hour.

I once tried and failed to read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Many years later, I've discovered that Zen and mechanics can go hand in hand but you don't learn it from a book.
Since this is last call, I'd just like to say that for all his moviemaking faults, Kevin Costner absolutely bookended the baseball genre. I've been watching Bull Durham for the umpteenth time. That, combined with Field of Dreams, comprise the endpoints of worthwhile baseball films. Fortunately, there are several in the middle.

I actually slogged all the way through it, and although I'll be damned if I can remember everything about the book, it did capture the Zen of riding a bike quite well if I remember, as well as the Zen of mechanics. There was a lot of gobbledygook in there, too, which made getting through the whole thing a chore. I agree, though, the Zen of wrenching, which I equate to just plain patience and thinking the job through, comes with experience. Some people just plain have no feel for it, and never will, and so will never gain that kind of experience.
Oh, and I actually liked Waterworld and The Postman. Keep that in mind when I try to wax philosophic.

It's been my bedtime read for several months now, I'm at the point where I may as well give up unless I get the chance to attack it properly. Thing is, when my girlfriends with me something always comes up.

Bull Durham is excellent, and A League of Their Own must lie in the middle. Baseball, on the whole, could use some work.

I couldn't agree more about "Zen…" That is one of those "cultural touchstone" books that flat kicks my ass.

Yeah, the first half or so is really good but then he starts wandering just a bit too much with the Phaedrus and Quality philosophy. I'm all for discussing philosophy, but that portion is just not very well written.

Who cares about the exhaust? I want to know where I can get rasta tires.

I'm pretty sure a couple cans of spray paint will take care of that for ya…

"Dude, this is the *last* time I'm adjusting these carbs. Why don't you get something with fuel injection, like a nice BMW?"

Grasshopper, when you can snatch the keys from my hand, it will be time for you to leave this place.
