Last Call: The only proper way to drift is with the hood up

Whether you’re a Chris Forsberg fan or not you have to admit that this is sick. As if drifting wasn’t hard enough he manages to still tandem slide with the hood completely blocking his windshield. Although, I’ve heard that if you’re looking out the windshield to see where you’re going then that means you aren’t getting enough angle. I guess that’s why you see so many drift cars with a ton of stickers on the windshield. Either way, it’s still incredibly impressive, he has to be so in tune with the car to get such a smooth line that’s so close to the wall.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

    Back in college, I modified the grille of my car and the changes required removal of the stock hood latch. I engineered a new one, but apparently didn’t use a stiff enough spring in the mechanism. A few days later the hood suddenly flew open at 75 mph on the interstate. The support brackets snapped beyond their limits but ultimately held, only after the hood smashed into the roof of the car but fortunately (and surprisingly) didn’t even crack the windshield.

    Ironically, this happened less than a quarter mile from where– a few years later– I would lose the rear wheel from my CJ-7 (again at about 75 mph) due to improperly torqued lug nuts.

    Once I saw a guy crawl out of the passenger window, cross the hood to hand the driver a beer through the driver’s window, and then proceed to drink his own frosty cold one while reclining with his back to the windshield (intentionally blocking the driver’s view). They were traveling around 50 mph at the time.

    Instead of getting the Econoline painted I’m considering just having it wrapped. That way I can claim it’s an Econoline Type-R.

    I got to the steering fluid leak on the Camry yesterday. It’s not a rusted pipe, as I feared, rather just dripping from a connection. A new clamp might possibly fix that. There’s oil mist on the entire right side, rear and under the car though after 800+ kms with a leak that was much larger than I had anticipated.

    Also, a print ad for the 457 hp Ford Explorer plug in hybrid claims a fuel consumption of 0.3 l/Norwegian mile, or 78.4 mpg. This is beyond stupid and I can’t fathom why regulators allow that; given how tightly factual advertisement is supposed to be.

      On that basis do EVs get advertised with 0L fuel consumption? It’s even more nonsensical because the Explorer isn’t a plug-in, or is it different in Norway?

        EVs get their own standards, like WLTP. But Ford does indeed advertise this Explorer as “chargeable”, and there are photos of it plugged in here:

          The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is rated at 1.9 L/100km here; both must be based on a fairly short test cycle that can be done largely on the battery.

          Can only hope that sales staff can provide realistic expectations to buyers depending on their use case. Ha!

      I thought the EU test protocol was something like drive 20 miles and then charge for 5 hours, lather, rinse, repeat. It doesn’t seem too unreasonable to expect that sort of range without the ICE.

        You’re correct, but that is also a totally bogus way to measure fuel consumption here. Feels like we’re back to pre-standard times when OEMs used to state stuff like “5 litres of fuel at a constant 90 kph”. It creates some sort of comparison, but says next to nothing about every day mileage.

          It’s often said that used car dealers don’t make their profit when they sell a car, they make the profit by buying it at the right price.

          Fuel consumption measurements are in a similar category. It doesn’t really matter what actual real world consumption is; the carmakers strive to build a car that does well around the test parameters.

    I’ve seen similar things happen in rally and rallycross (including a clip with a co-driver hanging onto the front to hold something in place that I can’t find right now), but one of the reasons they can carry on in many cases is the drivers seat is set so low in the average competition car, you can just about see enough through the space at the bottom of the windscreen. Lots of drift and touring cars run crazy window banners that would be daft in a road car, but don’t really change visibility for them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwSBNjv-4Yw

    Fuel pump and filter for the BMW will be here on Thursday.

    Interesting fact, it has a fuel tank that straddles the drive shaft. So it has 2 fuel pumps and 2 level sensors. The primary electric pump is on the passenger side and there’s a siphon pump on the driver’s side to shift fuel to the passenger side. The siphon pump is driven by the flow of the excess fuel returning from the fuel rail. The fuel guage readout is the sum of the two level sensors. There’s a hidden diagnostic menu that can be accessed which will show the level in each side of the tank. I used it to verify the there was indeed more fuel on the passenger side and therefore the siphon pump, which rarely fails, was working.
