Meet your latest Internet idiot. Alex Choi posted the following video to social media, and it shows a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot. And there’s no one in the driver’s seat.

This is reckless, foolish, stupid, and it’s also the sort of behavior that can hurt others. Or worse.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged

    Ugh. Traffic is so bad here that people I know frequently ask me how to learn to ride a motorcycle. I’ve started telling them that it’s far more dangerous now than it was in the ’90s, and that I couldn’t in good conscience recommend learning to ride in this city.
    Every single vehicle under 20 years old has elephantine blind spots, and the drivers are all thoroughly distracted by their phone, GPS, console touchscreen, and there’s 100,000 more residents than 20 years ago, plus 45,000 car share drivers a day come in to town focused solely on getting that 5 star rating from their rider. And then there’s this fuckwad. “I can’t be blamed for running over that troop of Girl Scouts, my car was on auto-pilot. We just need to adjust the algorithm.”

      Time for the police to issue a ticket, given he has incriminated himself. If he wants to go to court to say it was someone else not-driving, good luck…

        Not in San Francisco. You can’t get a moving violation in San Francisco (which, even if this twat isn’t operating in Silicon Valley, I’m sure I can find someone indistinguishable in a matter of mere yards from me.) Six weeks ago I locked up the rear brakes on my Econoline and ran a red light standing on my nose one lane over from an SFPD cruiser, and then went all-in and gunned it through the left turn across two lanes of oncoming. Walked away from him.

        Also, ex-HoneyBunny once tried to show the SFPD a security camera video of her Harley- Davidson being stolen. They said they didn’t have the equipment to view the file (this was 2007) much less take it into evidence. The lesson was, “Take your dash-cam Go-Pro video and BIOYIOP.”

          And they wonder why there are law and order issues, declining respect for the police etc. Not sure much would be done here either FWIW.

          How does a policy like that come into being? I don’t see it making any sense…is it to avoid chases? There are other solutions to avoid chases, after all.

          Video evidence from dash cams has had a profound impact on following up traffic cases here. It creates more headlines if they don’t lead to a conviction. Even though I am in the camp that considers permanent surveillance super-problematic, it makes sense to follow it up once you have the data.

          People that have filmed themselves driving too fast or too stupid and then posted that online, have lost their licenses and paid fines en masse – stupidity is not fineable in itself, but it helps that these people want to share…

            Soapbox alert. While this rant is political, it is bipartisanly so.

            Eventually, damage done is repaired by someone with insurance, so we have collectivized liability via premiums paid by suckers that choose to be responsible. Police departments are hamstrung between a citizenry that is perpetually in a 51/49 love/hate relationship with them that swings day-to-day and politicians that won’t stand up to anyone or for anything. Municipal politics in the US is generally concerned with power over development permitting and contracting, or if you’re a hack like the erstwhile Baltimore mayor, you just jump to the end make people buy your book. You get the impression that the cop on the street trying to do his job is more than likely a good guy trying his best, but that there are elements of policy and culture that bubble up through to end results that just make you shake your head.

            Property crimes are rarely investigated, much less prosecuted in most cities, Police claim to be too busy to attend to things that aren’t related to imminent public safety. I’ve seen the internet hive-mind solve and provide video evidence of a crime with documentation of where the perp lives gift wrapped to the police, and they do nothing. Meanwhile, they set up shop on one of the woefully few freeway entrance ramps out of the CBD of America’s fourth largest city during rush hour issuing tickets for not wearing seatbelts and execute no-knock guns drawn warrants on low-rung non-violent drug trade losers.

            That soapbox has got some wheels on it, so I guess it’s approved. Funny how your post conjures up at least a handful of US TV shows in my head that showed pretty much the ugly side of this – always thought it was exaggerated. And in big cities of millions of people, I am an optimist assuming that the good ones float to the top, despite occasional evidence of the contrary.

            Scandinavians always assume they are the world champions of governing. But it’s much the same here: After a few decades of little to no crime, a lot of municipalities incrementally ended up with zero police. I live in such a place, no police presence in an area that takes 1-3h to drive through, depending on the route. Video evidence of diesel theft (common on parked commercial trucks), property crimes and just good old vandalism are not pursued. This is enraging to some, especially trucking companies, a few of which have high media profiles. But nothing happens.

            The worst of it is usually avoidable, but it does pinch you on occasion. The serious crime problems in the US can be so isolated geographically that it is something of an equilibrium that has its own entrenched interests that people would rather not change or at least don’t know how without trade offs they will not accept. Nearly every large city will have an element of it though.
