Hooniverse Weekend Edition: The 2003 Mercury Messenger Concept offered at RM Auctions Monterey

As Mercury rolls to a halt this summer, could this concept have saved Mercury from its fate joining Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, Oldsmobile, AMC,… and so many other automotive marques? Automotive Traveler’s Rich Truesdell ponders this question while RM Auctions offers this and many other Ford Concepts at their auction set to take place in Monterey August 12th through the 14th. Author and columnist Rich Truesdell remarks about this particular concept this way:

In the dark room that is Detroit’s Cobo Hall, I sat among 6,000 other journalists watching the Mercury Messenger roll onto the stage as part of Ford’s 2003 North American International Auto Show press conference. My first thought was, “Damn, this light-blue, two-door coupe was exactly the kind of car Mercury was crying for to help distinguish itself from the Fords that all its models were cloned from.” In its proportions, I thought it bore more than a passing resemblance to another Ford concept: 1963’s Ford Cougar II.

Ford and especially GM (I'd be nearly *half*, Eddie) seems to be unloading their car collections.
Despite its infamousity (/Shakespeare) and my troubles with it, I still kinda wish I could grab my car back from GM's Heritage Collection.

I'm not the only one getting an Aston Martin-ish vibe in that concept, am I?

The Messenger would have done so much better as a concept if it was painted a more dramatic colour than Sky Blue Metallic.
Look how hard they tried to reinterpret those '69 XR-7 Concealed Headlights

Who else sees the Messenger as having Lancia Stratos DNA?
    Anyone?

I’m typically not the guy to write comments on people’s blogs, but for this submit I just had to complete it. I’ve been digging close to your blog page great deal nowadays and I’m extremely impressed, I consider you can actually emerge as the principal voices for your market. Not sure what your load is like in life, but in case you started devoting far more effort to posting on this website, I would guess you’d begin seeing a bunch of traffic soon. With ads, it may possibly become a sweet second revenue stream. Just an idea to ponder. Superb luck!
