Hooniverse Weekend Edition – Cars You Should Know – The 1999 to 2001 Dodge Ramcharger

We received this delicious tip from OA 5599 (Thanks Man!) about a vehicle that has been rarely spotted in the states. What is unusual about the vehicle is the fact that is was crafted by one of the Detroit Big Three for Mexican consumption only. Introducing the 3rd generation of the Dodge Ramcharger.

According to all things Wikipedia (Hey, its on the internet, so it should be correct!):

In 1999, a new Ramcharger was produced in Mexico based on the second generation Ram pickup and using parts from the Dodge Ram pick ups and other Chrysler vehicles. Sold only in Mexico, where the previous generation Ramcharger had been quite successful, it was not offered in the U.S. Because of this and other issues, this generation never enjoyed the sales of the previous generations of Ramchargers. Powered by the 5.9 and 5.2 Litre (360 CID and 318 CID) Magnum V8 and offered only in 2WD versions, it was discontinued around 2002. The rear hatch door was borrowed from 1996–2000 model Dodge Caravan.

And look, I found two Mexican Market Ramchargers for sale. The first one I spotted is on Autotrader, and the listing states:

RARE Dodge Ram Charger SLT in great shape and mechanically sound. Non smoking Adult Owner. No accidents to report of. The vehicle runs just like it was new. Includes After Market 24 Chrome Akuza Wheels and After Market Jensen Radio with original factory radio as well. This car has been well maintained, on time, with all recommended services and oil changes; recent records available. Smogged 5/ 2010. Registration and Pink Slip in hand. On the outside, its nice looking, no chips or dings, just a small easily fixable crease above back wheel on drivers side and also a missing plastic corner that goes to side step I have the piece but it does not perfectly match the cars color. The half leather/ half cloth interior is solid and in great condition with only normal wear, but there is a minor tear in drivers seat to report (see pic). Everything in perfect working condition except for cigarette lighter which is missing a piece. This Ram Charger SLT is a very rare find! Im sure you will be the only person you know who has it! So get ready to turn heads and leave people wondering, what kind of SUV is that?

Asking price for this vehicle is $9,500, and there is 22 illustrations with the ad, so go here to take a look at it.

The second ad is a Craigslist listing, from the St. Louis metro region. this truck looks very similar to the one above, right down to the 24 inch chrome rims. According to the listing:

ONLY 8 OF THESE FACTORY RAMCHARGERS REGISTERED IN THE US! MANFACTURED IN MEXICO ONLY, BASED ON THE 1500 SERIES RAM, 2 WHEEL DRIVE, 360 MAGNUM, AUTOMATIC, 3RD ROW, 24″ WHEELS, SLT, GREY/BLACK LEATHER, LOADED! ONLY 80,000 MILES. PEARL WHITE, TRAILER TOW, READY TO GO!

This time, the asking price is $12,500. Its very uncanny that there would be two White Ramchargers with the same equipment in the country, but take a look for yourself. What do you think of this Mexican Beauty?

Being a fan of the Dodges, I had seen these before, but had no idea that there were any for sale privately in the U.S.! I would have one if the price were right, and it was located relatively close. But, sadly there are far better vehicles that I would drive a great distance to own. Maybe if one came up for sale in the Detroit, or Grand Rapids area, then I would probably own it. 🙂

My guess is that the Auto Trader one is fake and the St. Louis one is real. Why? The St. Louis one has a real phone number and the one in Long Beach does not.

I used to think that Dodge should make these, until the original Dakota-based Durango came out. It seemed like the big 2-door SUVs were dead the day that Chevy brought out their shortened-Suburban Tahoe. I wouldn't go out of my way to own one, the Mexico-only/2WD only nature doesn't square well with my living in North Dakota.

Ford got into the two-door SUV game in Mexico long before Dodge with the B-150 of the 1980s. They were available in both window and panel setups. The panel job looks especially nifty.

Looks like an F-series front end with an E-series van rear end.

The E-series rear door and panels are quite a bit taller than the ones on the B-150, and the creases are in different locations.

Dodge had a fixed-roof fullsize two door 150-class SUV long before 1999. It just wasn't a Mexico-only vehicle.

How are they able to sell these? As far as I know, they're not legal to sell in the U.S., from a DOT and EPA standpoint.

      Gray market imports?
If it were illegal, I'm sure they would have been busted for selling them by now.

Perhaps somebody with a Carfax account will look up the VIN of yhe Autotrader one to see if any clues are provided.

I had a Durango and loved the crap out of it. I always wondered why Dodge never brought a Suburban-killer stateside. In the land of ginormous SUVs I think it would have been a hit.

I seen on Wikipedia they wouldn't pass tve rancher to the us because of safety standards but that was in 1996 I've dug up more info on it they changed the rear seats to a bench seats like you'd see in a bronco or Yukon I didn't see any safety hazard since the change of the seats they was going to release it I'm the us from 99-02 but since the Yukon and explorer sales dropped they didn't bring them over I want one so bad I can't stand it I'll get one sometime

The Detroit 3 used to make some strange marketing choices. Today, it's hard to find a regular-cab truck on dealer lots, but GM didn't do an extended-cab fullsize until the 1988 bodystyle change, although you could get an extended cab 1st generation S-10. I remember seeing an aftermarket conversion in a Chevy dealership around 1986, and the conversion was nearly the cost of the base truck. Also, when GM changed the pickup designs for 88, they didn't think it was important to change much more than grille and headlights on the Suburbans, Jimmys, and 2500/3500 trucks for a couple more years. Of course, GM also abandoned the Syclone/Typhoon before that market segment started to soar.
Dodge offered an extended cab in the mid-70's, then it went away for several years before returning. And, yeah, never offered a Suburban competitor.

Yes Chevy did not have a C series extended cab until 89 or 90, but Chevy sold the 4 door pickup from 74 on for the same price as an extended cab. Some called "bonus cab" did not have rear seat but still had 4 doors. Thats how Chevy remained competetive.

On a similar note, Mexico also has a new version of the discontinued-in-the-States Lincoln Mark LT.
