Inspired by Bradley’s interview with Graham Rahal, I decided to conduct a series of my own interviews with people from within the automotive industry. My first victim interviewee was John Krafcik, the president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America.
I would like to point out that this interview stuff is not easy. The venue that we were at did not allow for a more candid conversation, such as the one which Bradley conducted with Graham. Admittedly, in my semi-perfectionist way, I also did not prepare well for this interview. The future ones will be better.
I hope.
Hooniverse: What cars do you currently own or drive?
John Krafcik: 2006 Porsche Carrera 2S, 1998 Caterham Super Seven (let us know when you want to sell it, ok?), and a 2012 Hyundai Genesis Spec R
Hooniverse: Will there be a V8 engine in the Genesis Coupe to directly compete with the Mustang and Camaro?
John Krafcik: I cannot comment on future product
Same answer applied to diesel engines, trucks, and all other future product including trucks and a super car. There was one exception however, a Ford Bronco/Jeep Wrangler-like vehicle to which the answer was a very confident “no”.
Hooniverse: Do you ever drive your competitor’s cars?
John Krafcik: Yes, all the time. Today I am driving a Dodge Charger SRT8, and I love the sound of the exhaust.
Hooniverse: Will Hyundai get more involved in motorsport?
John Krafcik: Yes, but I cannot comment specifically which.
Hooniverse: What impact do you have on the final product?
John Krafcik: Does the concept meet the target, overall input on the concept, depending if U.S. is the biggest market, overall approval.
Hooniverse: What was the latest car you wrenched on?
John Krafcik: The Caterham, lots of bruised knuckles.
Hooniverse: Do you have a favorite automotive publication?
John Krafcik: I read Autoblog; I like the layout. I read a lot of forums where I get feedback directly from our customers. I like twitter, I click whatever I find interesting in my feed.
Hooniverse: Thank you.
If you have more questions for Mr. Krafcik, your best bet is to tweet him @Hyundai. May I suggest you follow @TheHooniverse. Thanks!
