Hooniverse Classic Toyota Weekend – A 1967 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser

The Iconic Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. Nothing rivals its prowess off road other than the original Land Rover, and various Jeep CJs. The Land Cruiser was one of the first Toyota models to be imported into the states, and it still remains a pillar within the Toyota model range, albeit with a few more luxury items. However, let’s explore the Land Cruiser roots with this 1967 FJ40 that is currently for sale on eBay.

According to the listing:

Here is a 1967 Toyota Landcruiser with less then 24000 original miles, this truck has been in California and then Nevada since new, I am the third owner, I talked to the original owner and he verified miles, the second owner put new tires, brakes, upholstery, all new weather stripping around windows, doors he also painted it, I took it to my mechanic had all oils changed, the truck is still very tight as neither owner ever used for the dirt, I have original carburator and air cleaner plus original spare tire and mount that came from the factory, the pictures say it all. I have not found any rust on this vehicle, this is extremley clean and tight Landcruiser.

Current bid for this rugged beauty is $7,700, with an unmet reserve. There is a little more than 13 hours left as of this writing, so how much do you think it will sell for? Express your thoughts, and while you’re at it, take a look at the listing here.

You might be surprised by how thirsty these Land Cruisers were – a friend had a mid-'70s model and it typically got around 15 mpg. Also, the ride quality was pretty brutal. The early LC wasn't built for comfort. I have no idea what these things are worth, but I know good ones aren't cheap anymore.

I expect the price to jump wildly towards the end of the auction. Very sweet and capable truck, and it is nice to see one as it was meant to be, not all cut up or sooped up as is the fate of most. They make great mountain runabouts just the way they are.

It went to $8100 with reserve not met. No surprise, an FJ40 in this condition is probably worth $15k with a little patience. They're approaching Land Rover prices except at the very top end, which is also the only place where old CJs are worth as much as an FJ.

Looking up rover prices I see a fairly clean brg Rover 2000tc (P6) bidding at only $515 for now. The original wheels are gone, but the interior is very good and I see nothing but minor surface rust in the pictures. The engine might be shot, but you could probably get an old Rover V8 to fit. I want it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-ROVER-2000-TC
