Hooniverse Asks: Do you have a good local car show?

There are a handful of good weekend car shows near me. The first Sunday of each month sees a show called Sunday Steele playout. It’s a small but growing gathering of machinery with a slight bent towards more European offerings. You have the standard mega Cars and Coffee show in San Clemente, which takes place every Saturday. And there are tons of other shows all throughout Southern California.

I ask this question today because a show in Malibu is causing a bit of a stir. It’s a Cars and Coffee-type gathering that takes place in a fairly posh part of greater Los Angeles. And the city has had enough. This seems like a shame since those businesses are definitely getting money from folks buying coffee or food in the morning. Then the cars and people clear out as normal business hours roll around, and everyone goes about their day.

Regardless of what happens to that (not a) show. There are tons of other great gatherings taking place all the time. How is it where you live? Do you have any good local car shows?

One cool note about the pic I used here, is that the red BMW to the right of my Jag brings a keychain-making tool with him to local car shows. He has an Instagram, and I don’t know the account name – I will pay more attention next time I go to Sunday Steele.

I guess you never decided on a custom plate for the Jag? Any updates?

Either that or we have to start guessing what 8SMV168 means as a custom plate.

I ordered one right after I got the car… and it still hasn’t shown up.
I’m genuinely curious if my order just hasn’t made it through or something. I do have the receipt for the transaction. But I’m tempted to go to my local AAA, and just order it through them, as I have in the past.

Also, full jag video coming soon. I have one thing I’m getting diagnosed on it this week, then I shoot a proper introduction. And I’ll have a write-up to go with the video.

We have Katie’s Cars and Coffee, easily the biggest around DC. It went offline during COVID and was slow to come back, so a ton of pop-up versions have been happening around the DC/MD/VA region. I like to go to meet people (that’s how I got access to that Alfa 147) but it’s tough to take good pics since every car is surrounded by people and in the end, it’s still a parking lot.

Katie’s Cars and Coffee is fantastic. Locally, I’ll go to the Annapolis show (Sunday 0800-1200 at Dock Street or at Annapolis town center). It is smaller than Katie’s but still a good selection. I’ll also occasionally go to Timonium’s show (I believe on Sunday morning 9-11) but it has been well over a year since I’ve been there.

It was local enough to be a day trip from Seattle so I’ll count last month’s Concours de Maryhill at the Maryhill Museum. It had a little bit of everything from vintage race cars to an unrestored daily-driver Durant. This was also one of the few days each year when the historic Maryhill Loops Road is open to motorized traffic and I’d been wanting to drive that for some time now. The Northwest SAAB Owners Club held its meeting at the show, too, which led to the inevitable SAABhenge group photo…

back when I was in Central Texas, I’d get up at 6 on some weekends to drive down to Austin Cars and Coffee. they had a beautiful venue up in the hills, and the cars that turned out were properly eclectic. great show every time. I never regretted the early morning or the 90 minute drive.

now I’m in Jeff’s part of the world and I’m pretty spoiled. the local small meets are great and plentiful, and the canyon traffic yields micro meets at every scenic view turnout. (in America, we formally designate locations at which to be stunned by natural beauty.)

Yup, there’s a car show in so many little pockets pretty much throughout California.

I may hit Sunday Steele this weekend

Our local cars and coffee event has been fantastic. I’ve been going for 6 or 8 years and it’s grown from 20 or so to 300+. Then, last spring, some guy spun his Mustang trying to look impressive on the way out (thankfully no damage or injuries) and we were kicked out out of the center we were meeting in. Looks like we have a new venue just in time for cold weather.

There’s actually a second C&C group, but it’s a more traditional structured car show with high end cars, themes and sponsors. I’ve never been to that one.
