BBS gold basket weave

Hooniverse Asks: Do you have a favorite set of wheels?

I picked up a new set of wheels for The Jag. Well, new to me. The old girl is getting a set of BBS basketweaves with a gold center and polished outers. We’re keeping things in the 15″ space, so the stance should be appropriate for the vehicle and allow me to serve up meaty sidewall. These wheels need a proper polishing but they are otherwise in excellent shape. And I’m excited to get them on the car.

BBS has been around for a long time. It supplies wheels for both top-notch street cars and many a winning race car. And now an old Jaguar sedan with a 350 V8, because why not?

I’m not partial to any wheel brand. The Fifteen52s on my Montero are great. I’ve always been impressed with the quality of what HRE produces. And it’s hard to beat a tough old beauty like the D Window from American Classic. Further, the classic steel wheel can be a perfect complement to any vehicle. It’s the opposite of the iconic TE37, yet they both fulfill the same ideal.

Do you have a favorite set of wheels? And if you want to say Ronal Teddy Bears, this is a safe space…

TSW Evo is my holy grail of wheels. I had a set once but never had a car to put them on so I sold them. I’d be very tempted to buy a 16 valve 190 just so I could run them.

Volk TE37 will always be “the ultimate wheel” to me. Simple, 6 spokes, makes nearly any car look good.

I must demur, THE wheels for a Series III Jaguar are the Ogle Design ‘Pepperpot’ alloys.

From the design team that brought us the Reliant Scimitar, the Leyland T45 truck, the Bond Bug, the Anadol, the ‘Star Wars’ Tatooine Landspeeder, and the Raleigh ‘Chopper’ bicycle.

And they are now available in a 17 inch size for a more modern tyre choice than the original 15s.

Pepperpots were the standard wheel fitment for these cars when new, the only other car they came on was the William Towns designed Lagonda ‘Wedge’ limo whereas, IMHO, the BBS are German wheels best suited for BMWs.

Learned something…”pepperpots” it is, indeed a neat fit on this kind of XJ.

It’s funny because I always think of XJ40s having the thick spoked GKN wheels like an 80s Range Rover.
It occurs to me that a series II or III XJ6 would look very hooliganish with some fat tires on Wolfrace slot mags

Came here to say the same. Love a classic 5-spoke design. If we’re talking Porsche, Fuch me (please).

Not a huge fan of wires and weaves, but turbine style wheels make me happy. The original “turbinfälg” sitting on the Volvo 240, with its balloony tires, still make me smile:

Amazingly, the 2nd gen Equus perfected this theme, and had some of the prettiest wheels I am aware of:

Oh dear…. Mrs Lokki has a bit of a shoe fetish, and I apparently have a bit of a wheel fetish.

My favorite on my Alfa Spider are the the Campagnolo (yes, the people who make racing bicycle gear) Daytona’s. They are made from Elektron alloy – essentially magnesium with a few additives. Each wheel weighs 12.2 pounds (about 5.5 Kg). The shape is a classic.

However, they are only available in 14 inch and tires have become a problem (or so I told my wife).

So just yesterday I mounted new Alfaholics GTA style 15×7 inch rims… which weigh 14.5 pounds each.

The picture showing the wheels ( below) is not my car, but mine is the same color.

So right now these are my favorite wheel.

Your last two picture links don’t work.

I was going to say a very similar style wheel, but from a very different source; the Globe Bathurst, which before it became well-known for being used on Falcon GT-HOs in the 1972 Bathurst race was originally called the Daytona, as it was modelled on the Ferrari Daytona’s wheels. Ford used them again later, up to 1981.
      http://www.aus-ford-uk.co.uk/assets/images/XB_Globe2-5.jpg

The original Ford size was 15×7, the first 15″ factory wheels in Australia, but Globe and imitators sold a lot more 14″ sizes in the aftermarket. There are now reproduction wheels available, even in 19″ sizes.

      A great wheel style.

My serious favorites, depending on vehicle are Minilite/Panasport, Hallibrands, 5 spokes like Cragar and Fuchs, and turbine spokes like the Ronal R8. My ironic fave is of course the Ronal Teddy Bear.

Those BBS wheels won’t look out of place on the Jag, though frankly I think the rims it currently wears look spectacular.

As far as personal use, my first daily driver that I purchased as a teen with my own money came with Western Bullets. Probably not what I would have chosen for myself at the time, but I’ve grown to appreciate them.

I have a (potentially irrational) love for the stock fitment DMC turbine wheels on the DeLorean DMC-12. I honestly don’t know if they’d look right on anything else, but I love how they look on that car.
