Hooniverse 24 Hours of Lemons Racing – Project Update 3

Hooniverse 24 hours of lemons buick in trailer

It fits! Our so-called racecar, a 2002 Buick Park Bench Racing Regal (intro) (part 1) (part 2), with its enormous spoiler/bench did fit into Justin’s enclosed trailer. Last minute preparations included modifications to the roll cage around the seat area, getting tires installed, and a ton of little stuff that takes up way too much time. Whether it’s a family trip or an endurance race, everyone could always use an extra day to prepare.

First and foremost, a big thanks to BFGoodrich for sponsoring us with a set of g-Force Sport COMP-2 tires, which seem to perfect for the Lemons race application. Additional thanks go to our friends at Turner Motorsport who are hooking us up with some high-temp brake fluid. And last and certainly least, to Hooniverse overlords for covering our fees and other BS expenses.

We’re almost ready, just a few logistical issues to work out…

Mmmm… so meaty….

We got our lodging figured out; Andy and Justin insisted on camping, but I am way too good for that (I spent weeks campiSidng in South America and Africa, don’t need to do it again), so I’ll be sharing a hotel room with the good guys from BlipShift.com. Yes, Hooniverse and BlipShift are in bed together, literally. It’s worth noting that Joe and Sebastian (the guys responsible for those awesome t-shirts) will be racing with the amazing SpeedyCop, and it’s been rumored that SpeedyCop has another amazing vehicle coming.

We also hear that there will be an acknowledgement/tribute to Sidney Brayton, a racer who died at a recent 24 Hours of LeMons South Fall race at Carolina Motorsports Park.

We still need paperwork and receipts that prove that we actually spent less than five hundred bucks, which should be easy because we did spend less than that on the car. Does this mean that I still need bribes for the judges? I guess so, but I am running out of time. We also need team food and drinks, and…

…and need to figure out where the nearest junk yard, auto parts store, liquor store, pizza place, strip joint, tire place, and coffee shop is.

before and after

We’ve come a long way…

As you’re reading this, we are probably going into tech and BS inspections. Hopefully we’ll have the time to get some practice laps in as well. Wish us luck! Other than that, as I am writing this, I am feeling nervous, anxious, and tired. I feel like I’m going to forget something, be it for the race, day job, or family related.

I’ll be sending pictures and updates (pending cell service) through the Hooniverse Facebook page and @TheHooniverse twitter, so make sure you like/follow us.

we're off... to the race

Justin… and, presumably, his son, leaving for NHMS.

    Keep granny-shifting, and don't double-clutch.

      DANGER TO MANIFOLD!

    "…get some practice laps…."
No! Resist the siren song of the practice session! It's just another opportunity for the car to break before the race starts.
    Best wishes.

A few installation laps should be plenty.

With a new untested car, it's a toss up. Break now, or break later.

Before reaching the track I prefer to test my car sufficiently to remove "or" from that conclusion.

Best of luck – that serious, enclosed trailer is luckily just hiding the fun stuff.

Best of luck out there. Does Hooniverse offer a contingency program if you win?

I'm pretty certain that all of your baser needs can be well satisfied within easy reach of the Laconia track. Might want to reserve time on some shop's tire machine: Saturday's can be short and busy, and not much is open on Sunday.

Enclosed trailer? Sheesh, must be nice, you 1%ers!
Good luck to you guys and make sure you don't take things too seriously!

Even that open trailer for the wheels and tires looks pretty cushy. Hooniverse sponsorship must be a sweet deal.

I'll be there as a spectator. and being a local, I can help you with most of those needs. Just look for the grey Focus with the Mt. Washington sticker on the bumper.

How didn't I see you?! I was around all weekend, mostly by the penalty box…
…where, surprise surprise, I did see more of the Park Bench Regal than I would've liked to.
I DO remember your car, though, parked just outside the pits on Saturday. Nice bumpers.

Yea, we spent a lot time in the penalty box on Sunday. Too much if you ask me.
But hey, we did great on Saturday.
