The randomness you can see on a side street in Germany remains baffling. I received these shots of a late-’60s Neckar 1100 Millecento from my Cologne friend Joe, and the little car really is a treat to the eye.
Funnily enough, there’s a pretty good beer market just close by. The PBR plates on this German-built Italian economy car are almost fitting – even if buying Nastro Azzurro Peroni would suit it better.
As the badging testifies, Neckar cars were Fiats built in Heilbronn, Germany. The NSU marque was involved in running the licence manufacture, until 1971 when the effort was shuttered.
The 1100 Millecento (meaning 1100, duh) was a variation of the Fiat 1100R, and the Neckar outfit churned them out between 1966 and 1968. The 1089cc engine produced a reported 48 horsepower when new.
The brown vinyl interior is a perfect match with the cream body.
Joe reports the Millecento is arrow-straight with no marks or dents anywhere. It’s probably the weirdest and rarest thing to spot, parked next to an Aldi of all places.

Very pretty little car. Well spotted.
Strong resemblance to one of the cars on my shortlist…

Nice Find. What are those pods in the street across the street?
-
Those are glass bottle recycling return thingies.

Ah, an Aldi. We have one in our town. Lots of I’ve-never-heard-of-them private label products, but at holidays like Christmas and Easter they have good German-made chocolate, dirt cheap, and even cheaper after the holiday.
That Smart (“Frei Parker”) – is that a free shared car?-
It is a generic “Car2Go” shared car thing, certainly not free! 🙂

Weird we’ve got those blue & white “Car2Go” Smart car here in Columbus Ohio too. And Aldi stores.
