Classic Captions – The 2004 Honda Civic Coupe Edition

Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post. This is a series of postings that are set to go off around this time almost every Tuesday, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous, snarky, or thought provoking caption that is some how tied in with the image. This image is only about a decade old, so let’s see you try and come up with a clever caption for this week.

Fullscreen capture 1212013 82153 PM.bmpLast week, we had an image of a Movie Star standing with an ordinary Dodge, and you guys tied in the image to the movie “My Fair Lady” very well. Kudos to you all.

One of the best tie-ins was from our own Tanshanomi (Yes, again) when he used one of the title songs from the movie, which had a chorus like this:“The Rain in Spain stays mainly in the Plain”. His delightful caption drew inspiration from the song, and for the rust issues experienced by the early Aspens: “The crust of rust stays mainly…oh, hell, it goes everywhere″. Oh so close Tanshanomi

However it was the Photoshop skills of Irishzombieman that was the winner this time. The original posting used the image from the print ad with the word “Unbelievable”. The image was changed by simply inserting the word “Unreliable”… See the image on the left. Congratulations Irishzombieman!

It’s now time to take a look at this weeks illustration. This is an advertising image for the 2004 Honda Civic Coupe. The group of guys that are standing around the car is the band “Dashboard Confessional”, and Honda sponsored their tour for that year. Does anyone know what this band is currently doing? I can only remember their song “Vindicated” that was featured in the closing credits from the movie “Spider-Man 2”, and, well, that’s about it. I suppose this was a great tie-in for Honda at the time, but looking back at it, I’m not so sure. Here is your chance to try and tie in any of the band’s song-titles to this image. It’s not as easy as any of the other Classic Captions in the past, so dazzle me with all the brilliance that I know our fans truly have. (You can click here to see the full size image)

You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate entries, and after listening to “Dusk and Summer” at least twelve more times we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this thought provoking image.

Keith Moon may have crashed a Rolls Royce into a swimming pool, but we parked a Civic near some carpet.

Three years after their fame peaked, The Icy Hot Stuntaz still weren't very cool.

I don't know man, all of them have shirts on (and not a single wife-beater!).

We've tested twelve different sticker packages for your Honda, find out which is Hands Down the one to add the most horsepower in this weeks episode of "VTEC KICKED IN YO!"

Yay, Irishzombieman! The best caption last week, for sure. Here's a Dodge for you.

You know, if you would have picked a Mustang or Camaro there would have been a great grabber/hugger orange joke in there. What kind of world play do I have with "Hemi Orange"?
Maybe I'm just not creative enough.

I'm sure you can think of something clever. ;D

<img src=""> Hey, somebody named IZM deserves a drink! If this is the brew I think it was, I've had it, and it was fine.

          Mmmm. Looks tasty.

We're here "For You To Notice" the Honda Civic. It is 'Hands Down" our favorite car.

I think the most telling indication of this band's legacy is the lack of votes for captions which reference their actual songs.

      1. $kaycog Avatar

        You're definitely right about that.

I prefer my Civics in Blue and Yellow.

Although as a Toyota man, I'd really be Screaming Infidelities if I had to drive a Civic anyways.

I'd rather reference Dashboard Confessional's 'grandparent' band, Strongarm. When Strongarm broke up their guitarists, bassist & drummer formed Further Seems Forever with Chris Carrabba, who then went on to start Dashboard Confessional.
Strongarm is still one of my favorite ways to get my occasional metalcore fix…

There is a vehicle that says "I rock", and says it almost as loud as your shows. Any stickers just put a finer point on it. It doesn't have the standard wheels, it's painted several different colors, it's reliable, it's inexpensive.
It's a fifteen passenger van with a bunch of junkyard body panels.

Which is more fake in this picture. The horsepower the stickers are adding or the tattoo sleeves?

Christian rockers Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Goran had very little success in the street-racing world with their dove-themed, mostly-stock Civic coupe. Removing the nitrous because "David didn't use a MAC-10 to bring down Goliath" was just one of their many errors in judgement that year.

  10. Devin Avatar

It's a little known fact that Dashboard Confessional started in the back room of a Pep Boys.

  11. LTDScott Avatar

Dodge unsuccessfully tried to sponsor this tour, knowing that the band's emo fans would appreciate how the mould release lines on the interior panels would cut their arms.

Damnit, we should have been a country band. Montgomery Gentry got Jim Beam as a tour sponsor. We're stuck with the Honda Douche-mobile!

The civic after all these years is instantly recognisable…. these guys not so much.
their fame must have been really minor cause at first glance I didnt remember them at all.

Thought it was Good Charlotte for a second but I believe theirs was more recent.
      Pretty good marketing really!

The boys thought their Civic duty was to upgrade the Judge's Honda. Instead they found out that there Instincts were wrong and were going to be put into a Pilot program for graffiti. The Judge said that although they may have thought they'd be Legends in their own time they were going to Inspire anyone. Instead they would be placed in a Shuttle heading to jail.

Because WHO are these guys? Never heard of them.

I got a rad Civic. I got rad bros. I don't need no chick draped over my finder.
Wait, that didn't come out right.
Actually, it did, but you'll never know that.

Just like Dashboard Confessional, the Honda Civic was once a one time wonder. Remember that time?

  25. dwbf11 Avatar

Much like the world of our teenage screamo music, the inside of a Honda Civic is a depressing place to be. Notice how they photographed us outside of the car.

In a departure from the conventional "If You Can't Leave It Be, Might as Well Make It Bleed" school of Civic modification, Dashboard Confessional's car was relatively tasteful, functional and unmolested.

You may regret it if you Don't Wait, because the next generation Civic is Hands Down a better car, but Tonight I'll Take What I Can Get, because there's Reason to Believe that Honda's reputation will suffer Slow Decay afterwards.
