Classic Captions – The 1963 Buick Skylark Convertible Edition

14427386289_91e9b0f46f_k Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post, and it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car or truck companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. Here we have a young couple doing a little House Hunting, but we will get to that in a moment… 14613794932_5348e76d48_k Last time, we had an image of a Toy DeSoto, and the response level was dreadful, and I really don’t quite know why… However, let’s see how good the captions were. The runner up caption was actually my favorite this week, and it was by mkep819, and it was perfect for the time period: “Unfortunately for Johnny, Betsy knew that he forgot to check off the “Cootie Protection Package” option, when ordering his new ride.” Ah yes, I remember the term “Cootie” when I was a lot younger than I am today, but there was one that you guys seemed to like better… And the winning comment was from Number_Six, but there was a small mistake buried within the caption: “You came in that thing? You’re braver than I thought.” – A young George Lucas gains 40 years of material in just one outing with his pedal-powered DeSoto. Um, Number_Six, this car was actually powered by a small Briggs & Stratton Engine, but the caption was still funny, so congradulations on winning the classic caption contest this time. It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and I’m going back to standard Automotive Advertising Images because you guys seem to respond to them better. This particular picture is part of an advertising page for the 1963 Buick Skylark Convertible, with a bright young couple looking into a house that sports a simple “For Sale” sign. The House itself looks rather ramshackle, but you never know what treasures you might find inside. The ad copy is rather interesting, and goes like this: “Find secret places… In the adventurous new Buick Skylark. Powerful Aluminum V-8 engine, choice of 3 silk-smooth transmissions. Dashing bucket seat interior. Despite its modest price, a “limited edition” car, every inch a quality Buick”. What the hell were the ad-men thinking when they came up with this drivel? What is a Modestly Priced, Limited Edition quality Buick anyway? And is this really a way of selling a car during this time period? (You can click here to see the full size image) You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (The couple almost look like they are trying to break in…), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this dog-gone image. Photo Credit: Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream
