Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post. Yet again it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears, so it’s now time to review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. This week we have an image of an American Built Ford living in Paris…

Last time, we had an image of a Sporty Oldsmobile with a menagerie surrounding it, and the responses were a little stronger for this week. The runner-up comment was from Devin, who seems to be a regular participant in our contest. His caption went like this: “It was at this point that the city of Des Moines realized they needed a uniform for their meter readers.” This was very clever, and one of my personal favorites, but there was one that seemed to be the favorite of the rest of you…

This week, the winning caption came from POLAЯ☄LAXITIVCAVEMAN (who is not only a frequent contributor, but one who keeps changing his screen name!), and the caption went as follows: “Although much smaller then, Becky (the blonde girl) eventually grew enough sizes to be the one to sing for Oldsmobile in 2004.” That right there was pretty funny, so congratulations POLAЯ☄LAXITIVCAVEMAN on winning the Caption Contest.

It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and it is an Print advertising image for the 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Town Victoria 4-Door Hardtop, which is really a mouthful!. During the 50’s, car advertising was almost like taking a trip around to far distant destinations, and this ad had it all. It describes the new Ford as proven and approved around the world, even if it was slightly over-sized for European roads. The ad goes on to say that the Ford Sedan survived Picturesque Torture runs on “Car Killing” trails, and over roads that were never really improved since the Roman Empire. But, it is the larger image, central to the ad in which I used as the main image, that is the most bewildering of all. Here we see the Ford Sedan with a nice looking French Female and her distinguished French Poodle (Which looks rather scary to me personally), a young man holding what looks like a loaf of French Bread, right in front of a French Police officer (or French Gendarme.) Yes, we are overwhelmed by all the French, but what the hell are the two riders to the left of the Ford (on Donkey’s no less) suppose to represent? Was this really the way to create a favorable image of an American Built Ford, and who was the target audience anyway? Only you can answer these questions, while we bring you this rather unique image to your otherwise boring Tuesday. (You can click here to see the full size image)

You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (I’d zero in on the asses, but that is just me…), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this provocative image.
