Clarion Builds Acura NSX fetches $135K at auction

The Clarion Builds program has moved off another great vehicle from its stable. That’s how it works though, as this program is designed to generate buzz around a cool build and then sell that build at an auction to provide funds for a worthwhile charity. It happened in the past with the wonderful Clarion BMW 2002, and now the time has come to hand over the keys to this excellent Acura NSX.

It started life as a ’91 NSX packing over 230,000 miles on its odometer. Clarion snatched it up and quickly set to transforming the iconic Japanese sports car. This involved swapping in a larger 3.2-liter V6 and then pairing it with a supercharger. AEM provided a computer, intake, and exhaust setup, and a six-speed manual gearbox was also moved over from the donor car that gave up its larger engine. All told, the upgrades provided over 460 horsepower, which is a huge jump over the 290 ponies that would’ve been there in stock trim.
It’s not just power upgrades though, as the chassis was given the business as well. Each corner saw a set of KW coilovers, Volk wheels, and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Upgraded anti-roll bars and a rear shock tower brace helped round up the chassis upgrades, and paired quite well with the large StopTech brakes.

Of course, seeing as this is a Clarion Builds car, the sound system was given a whole lot of love as well. Controlling the audio action is the NX706 head unit that gives the car navigation, Apple CarPlay, and a surround camera system.
The Clarion Builds NSX crossed the Barrett-Jackson auction block this weekend. There it fetched $135,000 and all of that money is heading off to help the American Red Cross.
Now we’re going to turn our attention to the BMW 850ci currently receiving the Clarion Builds love…

I can’t recall a design that has held up as well as the NSX. If Honda would slap a tuned up modern Odyssey/Pilot/Ridgeline V6 back there and refresh the infotainment to today’s spec, they could sell them for $50k all day with an intern doing the development work.

These engines are based on the same block as the V6 used in early Legends/ Rover Sterlings/800s and so this 450 hp engine would fit in one of those. Don’t tell Chris Haining.

So, maybe I’m reading this wrong, but my take away here is that the market for high mileage, sporty blue Acuras is heating up. Good to know.
