As much as Crosley's sheet-metal engine construction was maligned, the production version was actually much more robust than the design the engineers initially proposed.

Welcome to the new Jalopnik.

I hope I don't make these editors cry and subsequently get banned like I did on the J.
Just don't change the website layout. I popped back in apparently on the day the new layout was unrolled and sweet sassy molassy were there issues. I grew up on the J for a year or two but I've matured to the Hooniverse for all my quality car knowledge.-
With all due respect to your loyalty, asshattery and Jalopnik seem to go hand in hand.
-
To what end? Do they aspire to legitimate journalism? Great, they'll corner the market in wang-based news and emerging product sting operations.
-
-
Try it at ca.jalopnik.com. It still comes up using the old layout for some reason.

Science fair win.

When this motor starts smoking, you're done.
-
This is perfect! I have been looking for a new motor to swap into my firetruck/submarine/tank/pirateship/spaceship/fort!
-
This is similar to how GM designed the HT4100.
-
Except this will be more reliable, and won't require periodic feedings of GM's version of Bar's Leaks.
-
If you believe the Internets, even the Northstars are supposed to get that stuff. (When my dad and I changed the water pump on my mom's '98 Seville a few months ago we ignored that advice… but, my folks traded it for a shiny new CTS AWD 3.6L a few weeks later anyway.)

This is a clean sheet design.

Pros: light weight versus displacement
Cons: water-soluble -
After Simoniz pulled it's sponsorship, BRE found itself in a serious budget crisis.
-
So simple you can fix it with duct tape.
-
Too heavy. Scotch tape for the … win?

-
…Yes, I know, but they're still easier to tune than real Webers.

This engine is a likely to run as a majority of British cars that came with Webers.
-
correction, Lucas electrics, the webers were ok

"Sir, your bearings are so worn down they are paper thin."
"No shit?" -
The bad news is that you just presented an engine made out of cardboard.
The good news is that, based on this engine, the Federal Government has agreed to buy 75% of your company for $3billion as part of a bailout deal. -
Low Miles. Ran when folded.

Solid option for a cheap motor swap… until it rains.

Not to get all serious for a min, but THIS is engine paper art!

Put together with tape and glue, you sure this isn't built by Lotus?
-
Couldn't be, too much bracing for the carbs.

Sir Colin's first rule, taken to the extreme.

I said I wanted the new design on my desk this morning ON paper." -
Hooniverse finds the secret prototype for a new, more durable, and lighter engine that was planned for the 1975 Vega. It was cancelled because Chevy couldn't find a heat and oil-proof Magic Marker.

Would have been better off with a crate engine.

Recyclable engines, the new green technology.

… and here we have the latest in british engine design.

Paper or plastic?
<img src="http://i54.tinypic.com/qqeexg.jpg">-
Yeah, whatever happened to the Polimotor, anyway?
-
You got the intake manifold, the valve covers, and the radiator end tanks. Common sense prevail for the rest.
-
Per a Design News article Is the Plastic Engine Close? there are folks looking at plastic for things as critical as water pump housings and turbocharger compressor wheels.
-
I could see water pump housings, it would eliminate corrosion issues, but add crack issues. Compressor wheels sounds scary.
