Bugatti Pulled From Swiss Lake Goes on the Auction Block

A couple of months back, there was a story on Wrecked Exotics about a Texas man who drove his Bugatti Veyron into a lake. After seeing this 1925 Type 22 being pulled out of a Swiss lake all I can say is- copy cat.

After spending 73 years 160-ft down in a Swiss lake, this Bugatti has been raised and is being offered at auction where it is expected to raise £80,000 for charity.

Originally shoved in the lake by the tax man, frustrated by the Bugatti owner’s refusal to pay an import fee, the car was rediscovered in 1967, becoming an attraction to divers in Switzerland’s lake Maggiore. Surprisingly, when the car was raised, there was still air in the tires and patches of Bugatti blue paint.

Typical of Bugattis of the era, the type 22 is a sporting open-top  two-seater the 1,500-cc four cylinder of which could push it to nearly 100 MPH. While Bugatti is traditionally known as a French car maker, this car – as identified by a brass dash plaque – is a Brescia Bugatti, after the  town in Italy where it was built.

The car will be auctioned off in unrestored condition on January 23rd by Bonhams in France. Proceeds of the auction will go to a fund addressing juvenile violence which was founded by the Swiss diving club that discovered the car.
