An Alternative To The Daytona 500

While thejeepjunkie was able to score tickets for this olelongrooffan to this year’s 55th running of the Daytona 500, I just couldn’t bring myself to fight all that damn traffic and deal with all those rednecks just to see a bunch of cars go roundy-round from the garage area of the Daytona International Speedway.

Instead, I hung around The Garage and watched my buddy tinker with one of his rides. However, my fellow Hoons will need to make the jump to see just what it is.

That’s right. He has a vintage Chevrolet Monza with a V8 crammed under the hood. Now Dana, being the kind of guy he is, only had this project about 1/2 way completed when his ADD kicked in and he moved off to start restoration on his 69 El Camino.

But I will say this about that. This fucker is loud and sounds mean as hell. I’m not sure how it handles in other than a straight line but it sure sounds delicious.

And I would suspect he has his work cut out for him to track down all of the wiring in this beast to see just where it all goes.

But all in all, it is a great project that this olelongrooffan is sure will be completed one day. Unless that 57 Chevy 210 wagon sitting out front gets in the way.

"Vintage" and "Monza" (the Chevy variety) are not two words I would have connected.

Segue: I know the new Chevy SS is a VF Holden Commodore SSV in disguise, but is it really as tall as it appears in TV and in photos?

Since the body is almost the same as the VE Commodore / Pontiac G8 (the main exterior changes are at the front and rear), I doubt there are any significant changes in dimensions other than maybe the length – there might be a slight difference in height, depending on suspension setup. One of the local reviews (in one of the major Aussie motoring magazines – cant recall which one) noted that the front grille and headlights are slightly wider than on the VE – some kind of visual trick to make the car appear bigger.

    Life must be hard.

I certainly don't mean to sound conceited. It's just that after attending a whole damn bunch of NASCAR races over the years, the view of the race from the garages lasts about 1.5 seconds then all you can hear is the drone of the racecars around the track. The Garage where I live is close enough to the track that I can hear that same drone from my living room in stereo with the TV. I've always maintained that after attending a NASCAR race, the best place to watch one is your living room.
Now Grand-Am? That is a whole different story.

I actually know what you mean. I get Pit seats for the Indy 500 every year. The start is always cool, but with the crew tents in the way, I can't see much and only hear the drone. The grandstands across the way would actually be better not to mention cheaper, but I don't make those decisions and poor people sit there. ew.

If you ever want to give up one of those tickets, I'd love to take it off your hands (I live in Indy and am always up for a good seat at the race)

glad i stayed home too, easier to watch on tv and not wearing ear plugs and ear mufs to drown out the noise…….
I'm sure to hear about that too, but my hearing is already gone too far and the hearing aids keep getting turned up every year.

If you dont mind me asking? What did you do with the tickets?

They will be a part of a collage to be posted on the wall in The Garage sometime in the future; much like the tickets to the left of this image.

This olelongrooffan is to afraid of the behavior of someone to whom I would give this ticket. Afterall, next year I will probably feel differently about the 500. Maybe the Gen 7 cars will make a debut?

Not to mention there really wasn't much worth watching during the race. The only real racing was on the last lap.

I love a nice Monza and this one certainly counts, although I'm partial to the later model rubber nose hatch instead of the 'Town Coupe'. I also think that the slender quarter window looks a little lost without the vinyl landau top surrounding it.
Then again, I'm a styling kind of guy when it comes to cars, I'd rather it look good than go fast. The guy who built this seems to be more into the go that the show.

On another note..>WHY does Chevy have to keep putting those hideous, bulbous noses on their modern car designs? Is there someone at GM that's actually saying "Oh yeah…that looks great!"???
