This is a truly solid crossover with good hybrid powertrain implementation, plentiful creature comforts, and exciting styling to match. But is it a standout?

(While I did subject this vehicle to my regular routine, I didn’t drive it enough to do a full deep dive. As such, what follows is a quick-hit, bullet point rundown of the car’s Quick Positives, Quick Negatives, and Quick Bottom Line.)

Quick Pros

  • Interior feels much more expensive than the price point would indicate
  • Good ICE/hybrid integration
  • Impressive screens and tech
  • Good visibility and a panoramic sunroof at this price is a welcome nicety
  • Tons of safety equipment on board
  • Plenty of space in the second row

Quick Negatives

  • Not all interior materials are up to snuff for the desired intent of impressing
  • Engine is noisy and rough when it kicks on after the vehicle runs in full EV mode
  • Ride quality can be harsh over larger potholes
  • Chassis isn’t as composed as that in other CUVs
  • Shifter is silly (Why does every manufacturer have to reinvent the wheel?)
  • Available eye-catching paint and red leather seats (a turn off for some)
2023 Sportage HEV

Quick Bottom Line

  • The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD feels wholly worthy of its price; it drives well, offers plenty of space and tech, and is fairly attractive for a crossover. Those who don’t look too close at below-the-beltline materials or care too much about the 1.6-liter engine’s harshness will thoroughly enjoy the Sportage Hybrid, especially the versatility of the drivetrain and the level of features present at the price point. It’s not a standout, but it’s very solid across the board.
