What’s your automotive news for the week?

Nothing particularly fun or exciting happened this week that I feel is worth reporting on. The whole week can be summed up as such: an idolized man child threatened to move his car company to another state because he couldn’t reopen a factory one week sooner than he wanted to and the outlook for other automakers is looking abysmal. And someone decided it was a good idea to give the C8 Corvette scissor doors. In other words this week has been like all weeks so far this year – a shit show. So it’s as good a time as any to check in with you. How are things on your end? If you got to do something car-related this week that you want to share with your fellow hoon, sound off in the comments.

Have a good weekend.

My wwf tank on the x3 started leaking. Easy fix. Apparently when I bought new pumps last fall, buying the same brand grommets as the oem pumps was a bad idea, as they failed. Happily only a $10 mistake.

I have been having accelerator pump issues with the carb in one of my cars, and yesterday had to resort to a shot of starting fluid to start the engine after it had been sitting for a few days. I popped the hood to do that, and saw that my wwf tank had somehow detached from its bracket, and had been rubbing on the power steering pump pulley. It wore a hole through the plastic; fortunately, the hole is at nearly the highest point, and probably won’t leak unless the tank is more than 97% full.

A problem that solves itself is a good problem to have?

Going to continue working at home for another couple months at least so I have some things planned for the Mustang. A shifter bracket and camber plates are on the list. Some track days are starting to reopen so I’m taking it to Road Atlanta later in June. The goal is to get it all ready by then and hope I don’t break anything.

I’m having a having a hard time finding a reason not to buy a C5 Vette. I was looking at a few with the z51 & manual, pretty reasonable price for what you get. An ls, manual and super easy to make really fast in a not unattractive package. Hmmm. Not sure how Mrs Hoon will take it but…

Go ahead and buy the Vette. If Mrs. Hoon doesn’t like it, buy a thick gold chain and unbutton your shirt to the waist and use the Vette to go trolling for replacement Mrs. Hoon.

I think everyone should listen to relationship advice from friendly strangers on car forums!

True, though technically, it was secondary to the car advice.

My apologies if you felt like the receiving end of a joke – on a more serious note, sometimes the outside view of a “friendly stranger” does reveal certain aspects indeed…

No need to apologize. It was joking advice that I gave.

Its time to bring the Corvair out of hibernation and I’m looking at its oil change that it needs. It’s been slowly leaking oil during the winter and early spring. Which is just something the Corvair does through the valves on the pancake motor. Judging by the videos on youtube its a really bone simple oil change to do but I’ll admit it. I’ve never done one before. So I’m dreading breaking something on my classic. it kind of looks like GM made the car in a way that it would be hard too though.

Make sure you removed every bit of the old oil filter gasket before putting the new gasket on. A little bit of old rubber can prevent the new gasket from sealing.
And check the oil filter size: old style OEM filter or converted to current filter size.

Anyone add sound deadening material (hushmat, etc.) to a vehicle? Thinking about maybe adding some to the 4Runner at some point. The road noise is pretty high, but I came from an F150 that was like a bank vault.

I’ll be doing it in the next 6 months or so, but I haven’t before. Curious to hear others responses. I’ve been planning on Dynamat, but there seem to be a lot of other products out there that people swear by, too.

I accomplished nothing on the Spirit this week, but I did get a new bigger air compressor and an air hose reel. So much better than having a hose that needs coiled everytime you use it, and usually just ends up as a pile of spaghetti in the corner. So no car progress, but garage progress is good, too. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/30c255a72fd5bde70d2da5ab800a3411739039496fed80dde1fa8eb37b22bfd1.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/73274eb71c5e15a56a2ae1571f4a351dcc32c9f62176a8f6b25a2f5929d7eff3.jpg

I suggest not running the compressor where it is located. The compressor head is air cooled, but that fan (in the pulley) is too close to the wall to get a good supply of cool air, especially being in the corner of the garage.

If you don’t want to move it every time you fire it up, consider having it swap places with the welder, and pulling it away from the wall or rotating it so that the fan is away from obstructions.

Oh, good call. I’ve never owned a compressor this size before, and gave exactly zero thought to cooling of the engine when I decided where to put it. Thanks!

Fresh song from Kyrgyzstan complaining about government handling of the virus situation. I understand nothing but quite like the bike.

My best guess is an IZH Jupiter, but there’s some difference in the headlight/turn signal area; unknown sidehack. I’m also guessing the song complains of a return to Soviet era social control, given the Great Big Hat and uniform of the driver. Props for doing your own stunts, too.

IZH Jupiter 3 with Sputnik 2 sidehack. I met a guy with a Sputnik sidehack on a Suzuki DL-650, I think they’re still in production, but maybe not this model.

No real car news and little progress on the bsrn/garage planning either. Started back to work this week after 3 weeks of furlough and it’s put a damper on my personal projects.

Hope to get the Thunderbird out soon, perhaps even today.

I had a roll off truck driver, the uncle of one of my neighbors, knock on my door and ask if I would consider selling my ride. Had to turn him down, Too many memories and too many miles to let it go on down the road. Besides, for the money, replacing a known quantity would be nearly impossible.

      Are you back in Florida?

And when are you going to do the followup article on the CBS?
