What's Up Fremont?

Fremont Drag Strip
Things have been a little slow around here lately. Like, Westy Synchro with Super Swamper TSLs slow. While a few on our staff have some seriously legit excuses, mine’s not quite as acceptable: I disappeared for the last month or so because I was in the middle of a job change and relocation from Los Angeles to the former home of the Baylands Raceway/Fremont Drag Strip [ed: thanks Otter] and NUMMI: Fremont, CA.
I’ll miss the convertibles-year-round weather and 85 mph freeways (seriously Bay Area: speed up), but the new gig comes a reduction in commute distance from 80 to 11 miles per day, better job security, and enough of a raise that the concrete I’m staining is now my bank’s own. I’m a few notches down on Project Car Hell, in exchange for my own Project House Hell. Oddly enough, my 1967 station wagon didn’t have fake wood paneling, but my 1959 house does&#151well, did, until I pulled it out.
Anyway, he upshot is you’ll now be privy to coverage on on how to setting up a garage (as I’m in the middle of doing so) and a bit more coverage of NorCal’s kickass vintage rally scene, as soon as the next batch of parts for the Falcon arrives…

Not a big deal, but the correct name is Fremont Drag Strip. Baylands Raceway encompassed both the drag strip and dirt track, you'd get a lot of strange looks calling it Baylands Drag Strip. In any case, I spent my teenage years there…miss it

Every-time I drive by the old Baylands site I try to make out where the track used to be.
Welcome to NorCal, and hope to see you out there on a few Rallies soon! Let me know if you need any help.

Lots of great pictures at the Google link, including a couple of good ones of the late, great Dick Landy.

Hooray! Builds are the bomb. Personal security is also great! Good for you! If you haven't already, spy garagejournal.com. A dude Jack Olsen on there with his 12 gauge garage is an awesome budget build if you need inspiration. And he has great car. I, sadly, am not that dude.

Garage journal is my own personal little way to become discontented with my life.

Congratulations, Tim. I hope you discover the same thing that I have with my home of similar vintage – that it's built better than most that have come along in the last 20 years.

I have seen enough east coast/west coast violence in my day! Don't bring it to Hooniverse, Jeff.

Yeah, Fremont! circa 1972-77 I ran one of my bikes (Kawi 350 Bighorn, ran mid 13’s), and one of my turbo Corvairs (water injection, wrapped exhaust, etc., spanked plenty of V-8’s with it). And on Thursday’s there were motorcycle Speedway Races at the dirt track (those guys are animals!), lots of Fun had there!
