hooniverse news whats your naws

What was your news for the week?

Kicking it back to you this week. There wasn’t really anything exciting or even remotely interesting in the industry to cover, which is sort of becoming the norm. I can only talk about so many electric prototypes and compact SUVs before I go clinically insane. I’d much rather hear from you this week. So with that said, if you saw anything, fixed something, broke everything, or otherwise did anything even remotely car related that you want to share with your fellow hoon, sound off in the comments.

Started pricing out some new parts for my truck. Full brake replacement, sway bars, and maybe even some new tires… they’re getting up there in age. I’m realizing I’m most likely going to be “stuck” with it for a while so hopefully with new parts I’ll enjoy driving it more. I keep toying with the idea of replacing it with a newer truck, but I know I’d miss it. Might just end up with three cars when it’s all said and done.

Meanwhile, I’m heading over to a buddy’s house this weekend to help rebuild the engine on his G8 GT… and put a supercharger on it while we’re there. Just what they need on his wife’s daily.

We picked up a nice foot of snow last night. So, my day was spent blowing and pushing. Glad I put the blower on the tractor last weekend! Surprisingly, no broken shear pins. I also spent an hour getting the “old” snowmobiles that the boys have to ride ‘winterized’ and running strong – and then my kids didn’t feel like riding them. Oh well, I love winter (and for once, I’m not being sarcastic – I really do like winter)

Been dailying the Tundra with the Boxster down with a no start condition and me up to my eyeballs in a bathroom remodel. Noticed that the right front sits an inch or two lower than the left. Probably a broken or fatigued spring, so that needs to go on the agenda soon.

Gotta get this bathroom done first.

Been putting my front brakes off a little too long because I couldn’t get them apart last time I tried a couple weeks ago. Picked up a torch and penetrating oil before trying again yesterday (since I had to do winter tires), and got it apart pretty much immediately without breaking out either nuclear option, so just the very threat worked, I guess. I think I used a little anti-sieze where I maybe shouldn’t have, might have missed either proper lubricant or anti-sieze in places I should have used it, but everything is back together, the car stops fine, and it doesn’t vibrate anymore, so enough success for now (I’ve never done brakes solo before, and it’s been a decade since doing them with my father-in-law’s help).

I spent the week in Omaha, Nebraska installing exhibits in a new science museum, and did nothing automobile related at all.

Well, I did think that Omaha could really use a decent muffler shop, but then I remembered that I live in an arid place and not everybody can expect their exhaust system to last the life of the car (like the OEM pipes on my ’91 Econoline.) I grew up in New England, so I’m familiar with the growl of a naked Y-pipe and the hollow honk of a “bald Cat”, and the sight of whole mufflers dangling from a thread of bailing wire. Took me a while to get reacquainted with those memories.
