Weekend Edition: A Drive By at Blue Marlin Motors

IMG_1007

Welcome to the final installment of the random carp this olelongrooffan has seen over the past coupla weeks down here in the greater Palm Beach, Florida area. As I was heading south on US1 just a tad bit north of TheStuccoBox last weekend, I spotted that red and white Tri-5 BelAir hardtop in the above image. Just after that, my eyes moved to take in that Art Deco colored ’59 Cadillac coupe and I knew I would be stopping off to further check this place out. My fellow Hoons are free to do the same.

Yeah, that old Caddy is just right for me. The right color, the right number of doors, a significant lack of a post and those fins out back set the tone for the late 50’s era of North American motor cars.

After checking out that coupe, I turned to see what else could be seen in this highly desirable car lot. A second gen Riv caught my eye and I took note of the not previously known to me fact that in or around 1967, a Hoon could purchase a Buick Riviera Gran Sport.

And that Buick was merely a bookend to a whole row of cool vehicles. Yeah, that’s a ’63 Galaxie ragtop, a ’69 Cutlass vert, a late model Mustang, a $389,000.00 motor coach and wait until my fellow Hoons see what is lurking just behind that 80’s Vette and that ’72 442.

But first, let’s head back on out to the roadway and take in some sights. Yeah, much like my trip to the Barrett-Jackson festivities a few weeks ago, I spotted a pair of Plymouth GTXs. These weren’t twins like the ones I saw down there but they were close enough.

And a Yenko inspired Chevelle. Do any of my fellow Hoons know if Yenko actually built a Chevelle or were they all Camaros? Having said that, this olelongrooffan is fairly certain this is not the real deal because if it was, I would suspect it would be residing inside Blue Marlin Motors showroom and not baking out in the Florida sunshine.

IMG_1012

And parked down behind that Corvette was this street rod pickup truck. It started out as a stovebolt era GM product but it has been extremely modified, codified and painted within an inch of its life.

IMG_1013

When I first spotted it, I wasn’t sure if it was originally a truck or what initially looked to me like a late 40’s Mercury sedan. That bowtie on the grille could have meant it had a SBC lurking under the bonnet. CameronTheMan approached me about that time and informed me what it was and then proceeded to tell this olelongrooffan to come on into the showroom and see some before and after pics of it.

And that is what this olelongrooffan did just after checking out the 8 track tape player

IMG_1015

in this drop dead gorgeous Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 droptop. Yeah kids, this one is high on my list of vehicles I would like to own one day. Granted that is a very long list.

IMG_1016

And which of my fellow Hoons doesn’t like Pontiac’s Indian Chief logo from many moons ago?

IMG_1017

After CameronTheMan and this olelongrooffan traded some contact information, he proceeded to show me around the cars on display inside but then he looked over and said, “Come on and check this out.” And you know I did.

IMG_1018

Well, he took me out back to check out some more cool cars. A DeLorean, a Noble and an early 60’s Chevy hardtop, both of the latter in bright red outfits.

IMG_1019

Yeah, that’s a DeLorean on that lift with a Noble parked underneath it. CameronTheMan told me a bunch of stuff about this particular Noble but as I didn’t write it down, that information has escaped me. I do remember the DeLorean had only 8,000 miles on its clock though.

IMG_1020

And that dashboard in that Noble is more spartan than the Miss Geico we looked at a bit earlier.

IMG_1027

Right about then, CameronTheMan is paged on the overhead intercom system to take a phone call and this olelongrooffan wandered about the lot a bit more checking out some more of their stuff. It was while I was checking out this 305 powered, Mustang II front end wearing Willys truck that an older gentleman approached this olelongrooffan and we struck up a conversation. He introduced himself as Spott Randolph and apparently he had spoken to CameronTheMan about me because he asked if I blogged here in the Hooniverse. I replied in the affirmative and he mentioned he was Facebook friends with The Chief Blooger. His son, Wil, is some big shot with some national car publication and attended the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona with a certain Alex formerly from out in the Pacific northwest and now residing in the Motor City.

After we chatted a bit about how small this world is, Spott asked me if I knew the guy who blogged over at Hooniverse and was a big fan of station wagons. You could have knocked me over with a feather and I identified myself as the longrooffan. He commented that he enjoyed reading my stuff and asked me, “Where in the hell did you learn to write the way you do?” I mentioned it just comes out this way. We laughed and he filled me in on this Willys.

Anyway, it was during this conversation that Spott mentioned that he was retired and kept busy by spotting automobiles for dudes and dudettes and making sure those automobiles were available for purchase by his clients. Yeah, Spott does car spotting for a living. What a name and what a job!
