Genesis G70 wagon

Wagon Wednesday: Give us the Genesis G70 Long Roof!

This is the Genesis G70 wagon. Genesis calls it a Shooting Brake but I will not be doing that since a true shooting brake is a two-door wagon, not a four-door wagon. Pedantry aside, this thing rocks… and it’s never ever coming here. Well, at least not until someone imports one in the future but that’s quite a ways off.

The exterior lines are fantastic in a polarizing sort of way. I really like that Genesis has struck out and found its own styling well from which to draw. Every new vehicle has a cohesive familial style that works great as a group and fits each individual model as well. And this G70 wagon is no exception.

Genesis G70 wagon interior

On the inside, it’s what you expect from a current Genesis model. A nice available pop of color, good seats, and nicely laid out controls.

Back outside, Genesis plans to offer 12 different colors and a range of paint finishes. You can choose between solid, metallic, matte, and pearlescent. That’s just downright fun in a time when luxury automakers typically shy away from the bright or unique.

As for the mechanicals, there’s a Sport package that plops on Brembo brakes and a limited-slip diff. You have a MacPherson setup up front and a multi-link rear as well as adaptive dampers. With respect to power, there’s nothing crazy though as Genesis offers two different 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engines and a 2.2-liter diesel mill.

The gas engine produces either 193 horsepower or 242 horsepower. The diesel cranks out nearly 200 horsepower but more importantly generates 325 lb-ft of torque. The gearbox employed here is an in-house developed 8-speed box.

Yes, it’s a rear-wheel-drive wagon with great style and packaging. No, you can’t buy it here. And yes, I understand why Genesis wouldn’t even consider offering it. The wagon isn’t dead yet, but it is quickly fading from dealer availability. It’s often a special-order only item and soon it will be a “Sorry, we don’t carry that anymore” machine.

Shooting brake? I sort of accept a 4-door shooting brake if it’s based on a 4-door coupe, but that’s not the G70. No, that’s a Sportcross if I ever saw one. Which I do, daily, passing by one while driving my kid to daycare, and that might be swaying me just a bit.

I blame the internet tubes, I’m sure they don’t flow quite as quick across the North Atlantic at this time of year, gives me just that slight edge 🙂

After the Lexus IS300 Sportcross disappeared, that niche was left wide open…wiiiiide open.

Can’t reply to Maymar and Sjalabais simultaneously, so I’ll just say — yeah, y’know, I always rather liked the Sportcross! My buddy had a “regular” IS300, stickshift, and it was quite a nice car; when I occasionally see a 1st-gen IS300 around, I still think it’s a handsome little sport sedan. The Sportcross I think wasn’t quite as attractive, but it was very well-adapted from the original design.

Meanwhile, to be perfectly honest, I think this G70 wagon is less so. I love that it exists, but it feels kind of “afterthought” to me. I think it’s largely in the fact that the rear side windows look the same as the sedan version’s, and that also results in a bit of a funky-shaped D pillar. I’d say that this could be the missing link between the G70 and the Stinger, for people who were torn between the two, and I’m sure for some it will (well, in the USA, “would”) fill that niche…but me personally, the G70’s offering of three pedals was what it got it on the radar (and kept the Stinger off), and this being a newer model G70 without the stick, well…

Can’t quite get on board with wagons that have the roof sloping down so much, and the upper half of the tailgate leaning forward so far

The Audi 5000 would like a word.

Loses some impact when I don’t attach the image.

I like the concept, but I wish the roof and glass was more wagon-like. It looks more like a low-slung crossover, with that swoopy rear pillar. I see that tapered rear and wonder why they sacrificed all of the potential interior cargo space just for the sake of styling.

I think I want more “station wagon” and less “four-door hatchback”.
