Video: The First Vroom-Vroom

the first vroom vroom

I don’t have kids. Currently, I have no desire to have children and neither does my wife. Still, that doesn’t mean I’m not curious about what little demon child angel the two of us would create. Our own Juan Barnett (AKA DCAutoGeek) does have a son. He, of course, hopes that his son will one day grow up to be a “car guy” just like papa.

Having a son means that you get to experience a bunch of “firsts”. Juan has had his camera handy for a bunch of these firsts… but it seems the one first that might have meant the most to him so far hits home for the hoons. It was his childs first “vroom-vroom”. Click past the break to check it out.

I like what vroom means to dad!
I'm struck that his child will see this video in 20 years and think "there I am, playing with that classic Corvette."

What that kid will think in 20 years: "Yeah, I remember back when there were ACTUAL toys instead of these cheap video games".

Well done. I think he is well on his way to blowing out a right rear on the family wagon from excessive burnouts.
As a Dad you can only hope, plan, bribe, teach, show the kids all the things you love and then see how it plays out. I've got two boys, so different but so much alike, at least it looks like they will both love the hobby.

I was very awkward as a child. This point was reinforced when, with friends recently, we got to reminiscing. In our school field there was a mound of earth and grass (called The Mound) which we used to drive our Matchboxes, Corgis and Hot-wheels over. Myself and my two best mates used to pretend we operated a junkyard, and my two favourite to cars to play with were a Jeep Wagoneer and a Honda Accord, inexplicably. But if somebody else wanted to join our game I would INSIST that their cars were the same scale as ours.
We were playing 1:60 scale. If some moron brought along a 1:43 or a 1:87 he would be laughed right off the mound. I was eight.

That's great! My friend Marcin would hold kids from the back and I would punch them to steel their toy cars. Hey we only had bottle caps until our plan worked. I was awful.

Mate, you gotta have consistency. Otherwise it ruins the immersion of the game 😛 When I was a young fella I had 1:60's, and my brother would try to play with me with the 1:43's. It's just uncool. I feel your pain.

My 11yr old son is a mini-me when it comes to cars.
We were in traffic and spotted an M3 sedan. I asked him what made the M3s look good.
He read my mind- staggered wheels.
It is great to have someone that likes a harsh riding car and taking corners hard. Hell, he was in the back of the Bullitt in a child seat running check laps at the track. He was 2 then.
    So yes. Nice video.

This is true for those of us who have daughters as well. Just ask John Force.
I have one of those Little Red Racing Car posters up in my kid's room, and photoshopped it to read "a father/daughter story". Having a daughter is very different that a son, true, but the bond and the love is the same. I hope she puts up with it. She seems to like the Matchbox Europa I bought her.

You need to come out of hiding, I thin that was the last thing I saw from you.
Of course, knowing how these things go, you're probably only just now remembering what some semblance of "normal" life/sleep/hours/cleanliness looks like.

I'm really busy, but have been published at a few Canadian-based sites, as well as that new BBC Autos site (have to admit, pretty chuffed about that one). I have some stuff I'm working on for TTAC, and I'd also like to do some Hooniverse stuff too, possibly towards the summer. Just met a guy who swapped a manual and diesel into his Citroen CX for instance.

I got my now 18 month old daughter a Power Wheels 4-wheeler for Christmas last year. On Christmas morning she would go stand by it and "rev it up" and do "burnouts" on the hardwood floor and just giggle. Hard plastic tires don't get much traction on hardwood floors. She is already riding it while seated on it backwards and riding it side saddle.
We still need to work on steering.

Now I have to go get the dirt out of my eye. Yeah, that's why it's leaking.

I've got three girls, but I am trying to turn at least one (the oldest) into a gearhead. Plus, she loves pro football.

I call shenanigans on the "first steps" footage. The video was awesome, and it makes me anxious to indoctrinate a little hoon of my own. At least my nephew's first word was "car". I had nothing to do with that, but I still think it's cool.

I was testing a Fiat 500 Abarth for a week. We were driving home from dinner with both of my boys in their car seats in the back and my wife in the passenger seat. I kept hearing a different noise that would increase in volume and then fade away. I finally asked my wife if she heard it too. She said our youngest was mimicking the sound of the exhaust. As I accelerated, it and he would get louder. When I shifted, he'd start over again. It was awesome and it helped me to like the Abarth a little more.

    1. Maxichamp Avatar

Was it easy to put the seats in the back of that car?

    2. mr. mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
      mr. mzs zsm msz esq

Sweet! My oldest thought the gear shifter was an engine volume control for a while. Like car would get louder, then I would move it over to a different position and it would get quieter again for a while. It actually makes sense that line of thinking.

So how was it with the Fiat and the kids? I see those 500's and I think the back seat is obviously too small for adults, but perfect for kids… but my youngest can't buckle herself in yet.

My boy is three he makes everything sound like a diesel, but he is very enthusiastic about it.
My daughter is 9 and she has no interest in cars. She used to be all about fixing stuff and getting greezee with me but lately she's more into singing and dancing. She wants her first car to be a beetle with each panel a different color so that people will be able to punch the shit out of each other when she drives by. I let her drive down our dirt road one day and she hasn't bugged me to let her so I'm guessing it made little impression on her.

I wanted my son to have a safe toy for his first birthday so I photocopied the cover pictures of a Bentley publishers Volvo 240 service manual to make myself a pattern and proceeded to carve him a wooden 240 out of a piece of 2×4. That Dremel shaping wheel thing is AWESOME!
