Subaru needs to bring back the SUS with a Legacy Wilderness

Subaru Legacy sales have steadily been going down year after year. I don’t know what is wrong with people but apparently, no one wants a good Subaru sedan. Those that do want a sedan seem to only seem to buy Camrys, potentially the most boring vehicle on the market. Clearly, an intervention for the Legacy is needed. That’s where I come in.

Subaru recently showed the Outback Wilderness and then the Forester Wilderness model. Here in New England Subarus are extremely popular and I’ve already seen many of the jacked-up Outback Wildernesses running around. Surely the Forester isn’t far behind. But what I don’t recall seeing, like almost at all, is the new Subaru Legacy. And let’s remember that the Outback is the jacked-up version of the Legacy wagon, which is no longer available here.

Being that no one wants the sedan but people can’t get enough of rugged-ish-looking SUVs, let’s give them what they don’t think they want. Let’s have Subaru bring back the SUS – Sport Utility Sedan.

In 1998, the Subaru SUS was a flop. But it was a flop because it was a sedan with some body cladding and a spoiler, and had a relatively higher price tag than the typical sedan, which at the time was still selling well. It was also missing a turbocharged engine and some desirable options. Subaru SUS was never brought back in future generations.

Times are different now so why not bring it back? Let’s just literally bolt on all the parts from the hot Outback Wilderness onto the Legacy sedan. Then, jack it up, add some light-duty all-terrain tires, and a full-size spare. The only new thing that would need to be developed is a sedan-specific roof rack with cross-bars.

Bam, you’re welcome Subaru, you are welcome!

Uhh, Subaru did a second and third generation of the Outback sedan, they just didn’t call it the SUS. Not many people bought it. Not many people also bought the Volvo S60 Cross Country.

On the other hand, that weird cladding on the new WRX might be them trying to force it back into existence, so *shrugs*.

All this talk makes me want to fix up my family’s old AMC Eagle wagon.

Would have to call it a coupe these days surely?

Would you buy one Kamil? I wouldn’t and I reckon you could count buyers on one hand

Big nope. People who want off-road capability want the wayback for cargo.
