Quick Pic: The Chrysler Sebring

This olelongrooffan never realized wheels from this gen Sebring are worth so much money that stealing them is worthwhile.

It probably just had Rent-A-Rims on it and they quit making payments.

You know, this is a business model I never understood. How does it even come into being? What happens to the mind of a car owner when they can’t afford new wheels, and then decide to rent them? Such a mind-boggling misallocation of money. “Rent to own” is a wild misnomer, too, and “if you have a job, you have credit” is probably supposed to cheer up customers, but I get away sad.

Never heard of RentaWheel but we have “Rimtyme” here. Same idea.

In the Dallas area we have Rent A Tire (same company as Rent A Wheel, just a different regional name):

The background on their homepage is graffiti, and one of those private property tow-away signs – targeting their customer base? “No Credit Check”, and “No Down Payment” are prominently featured.

No conversation about aftermarket wheels and Texas is complete without mentioning Gorilla Pokes!

I don’t know if they are! I’ve never personally seen a vehicle with them (thankfully).

In my experience this just means they suddenly needed the wheels for their race car.

Maybe they were racing their other Sebring at Sebring?

Angry ex-girlfriend = 4 flat tires. It’s easier to take the wheels off and take them to the tire shop than to have the car towed?

Yeah definitely cheaper if you have some way to get them to the tire store and back.

I never knew how Meh these cars were til I rented one in Hawaii. But one things for sure, setting aside the ‘Meh’-ness, Tom Gale nailed the styling and proportions. And look how it subtly shares an identity with it’s sister, the minivan beyond. In the future some people will collect these for their looks and 90s- ness

It looks like they took a little more care than some thieves but then again it is a bunch of rocks artand lumber it is sitting on.
Back when I started out as a sales rep calling on grocery and convenience stores I had some territories that included the less than desirable neighborhoods. It wasn’t uncommon to see a car w/o wheels sitting on the side of the road or in the parking lots. The best were the guys that would perch them on milk crates they stole from behind the grocery store. The car would be near perfectly balanced with one rotor just touching. I imagine if done right you jack up one end slide in the crates and when you drop it back down sans tires and wheels the other end is up high enough to slide the wheels off.

This and your reply completely jogged my memory of a couple instances of wheel theft! I can’t believe I forgot a really good friend of mine found his Integra laying on the rotors after a work trip (drove to work, took a rental for a week for training). I remember being boggled at how they dropped the car on the rotors/pinch weld. Damn thieves.

i can read where all of you have it dead wrong….they baddies stole the whole car. they left the hideous wheels and threadbare tires behind just to perplex the owner. the car is just so blah plain looking as to be absolutely invisible to the owner. probably left the rims standing upright with a white chalk outline of where the car had been and the owner was perplexed as to why it wouldn’t start.

I’m with the peanut gallery on this one. A set of fresh tires on a Sebring could be worth ~$400. A Chrysler Sebring was never fresh to begin with. Given however many years hence we are from that thing’s date of manufacture, even filling the tank all the way is probably akin to the situation where the doctor tells the old guy, “don’t bother buying any green bananas”.

Good that somebody found value in this car. The wheels!
