LeMons Australia is trying to run an event at Bathurst

Our favorite motorsport series, the 24 Hours of LeMons, has its icy tentacles in pots all over the globe. Well, the local folks really just license the name, but there are LeMons races that take place outside the cozy confines of the USA. For example, the 24 Hours of LeMons craptastic-palooza can be found down under in the great land of Australia. And the folks in charge of the organization are attempting to bring their brand of racing to the legendary raceway that is the Mount Panorama circuit.

At this point, it’s merely an expression of interest (EOI). That’s term the Bathurst regional council uses to describe hand wavers saying they’d like to hold an event on this magic mountain. At this time, the council has received six such EOIs, and one of those is from LeMons Australia. The others are from various organizations, none of which would be as insane smart minded to bring LeMons to Walhuu.

The Facebook post from the LeMons organizers suggest that it will take a lot of wishful thinking to make this come to pass. Fingers are crossed. The regional council has seen the hand waving. So stay tuned, because LeMons at Bathurst would be wild.

Bathurst is a pretty expensive place to race at because it is such a big track and they also need to accommodate access for people who live on the track, I wouldn’t be holding my breath…

      Breath not being held.
Still… how amazing would it be to have LeMons at freaking Bathurst?!

Why do you guys even need a track? I mean if Mad Max has taught us anything, you guys do Hardcore LeMons in the desert all the time. Mad Max was a documentary right?

There are plenty of places that could be done, I’ve seen a guy who ran unregistered cars in addition to having one main registered car because he was nowhere near any police; they were unlikely to be in the area if there wasn’t something unusual going on so the odd foray unreg was pretty low risk

Sounds like pretty much how the west of Ireland rolls..

And being a public road, you don’t just rent it for the weekend. And the owners of the few tracks that we do have are unlikely to allow it to be used for racing $500 beaters that are likely to drop debris, oil and possibly damage the track surface. Finding volunteer marshals willing to work through the night may be a daunting process too.
I don’t mean to be down on the whole race, I like the idea of it and if it’s local I may even volunteer as a marshal myself. I’d love to see a LeMons event here.

They have a Lemons race at Winton this weekend, then Morgan Park, Calder, Wakefield Park and even Tailem Bend. In terms of track damage the Baskerville track in Tasmania regretted having truck racing because it destroyed the surface.

The main issue with Bathurst are the blind corners and lack of runoff across the top as you would well know – far from ideal for novice racers.

Morgan Park? That’s my local where I usually marshal. Typically the car club is very protective of their track, being community funded and all, but the new committee seems to be opening the place up to more events lately. Thanks for the heads-up. If I have time off I’ll be going for one of my weekend rides down there.

So, what are the odds that some team will bury an entire spare car ahead of time?

I spent so many hours trying to master Mt Panorama and Laguna Seca on Forza 5 that I swear I could draw those tracks from memory. A Bathurst LeMons would be awesome!

As an update, I think they had half a dozen EOIs submitted, unfortunately (but predictably) the LeMons one didn’t make the short list. Down to two parties who will be invited to tender for the rights to hold an event, one being Supercars (although not a Supercars sprint race or endurance race) and the other Australian Racing Group who have talked about running an endurance race for TCR cars.
