Last Call: Why the Amphicar 770 is better than a Lamborghini

The Amphicar 770 is a forgotten car that deserves much more recognition. Sure you could pull up to your date’s house in a Lambo and pray she swoons at the sight and sound of your Italian purebred. But when it’s nice and sunny out she wants to go to the beach, who’s she gonna call?

It’s not just good for picking up a date either! Pick up a six-pack at the gas station and you’re set for a fishing day with friends. Or maybe you’re on your way home from work and the rain created a lake in the road. A Lamborghini in this situation would literally be up a creek, but the 770 would cross with ease. While it isn’t maybe as fast as other cars, 770 referring to 7 knots on water and 70 mph on land, it is an absolute head-turner.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, but it’s also encouraged.

I hadn’t realized this was a disputed point.

Amphicar actually out-sold the Miura 5:1, so no doubt on that point.

…huh. I shouldn’t have been surprised, I suppose, if I had really stopped to think about it.

Haha, I read this and immediately prepared to query whether you owned one.

        No. Too mainstream.

There’s enough demand that prices are on the high side.

Ha! I wish! It is on my list of cars to own if I win the lottery though.

It was a $200K Lamborghini, until it got through the light. Raw sewage really depreciates a car.

    I’m pretty sure that’s a Lambo, dude.

I recall seeing an Amphicar in Paris – and here is an article about it! https://www.messynessychic.com/2012/09/24/the-amphibious-car-that-lives-on-the-seine-paris/

I practically begged my father to buy one of these back in the 50’s. I’ve see a few, but never driven or ridden in one.

A British TV show called Wheeler Dealers restored one for their show several years back. Here’s a link to the video of the story, but it’s behind a modest paywall.

My uncle worked fot 20y in a VW dealer in my town (north Italy) and in those days they also sell the Amphicar.
I still seldom see one of those around in summer days (I live in front of a lake)
