Last Call- Soda POP Edition

The originator of this picture says that this is what happens when a can of soda left in a car meets a minus 10 degree weather. I guess Pepsi really is the choice of a spew generation.

My cousin did this in similar weather.
    With a full case.
She said they needed to take it to get thoroughly cleaned, but didn't post pics unfortunately.

I had a 2 liter bottle burst shortly after leaving the store- it fell from the rear seat onto the floor, outside of a bag, and one of the seams burst. It had apparently been shaken up a good bit, because I found out it had broken when soda started spraying at high pressure under the seat onto the back of my legs. As I stopped the car (didn't even make it out of the parking lot), it shifted, and started spraying the stuff all over the windshield, dashboard, and obviously, the back seat, too. My wife was pretty mad, trying to figure out how to stop it, and I couldn't do anything but laugh.

That looks like some kind of minivan, but I don't know what kind.

Second gen Honda Odyssey. Recognizing minivans is a skill that is rarely relevant.

I just found it too, with the help of cars.com.

Thanks–I was wondering what it was. I thought it was strange how they put the shifter in the correct place but didn't bother moving the wiper controls out of the way.

I hit cars.com and did a search on minivans from 2000-2008. The first ones listed were Odysseys.

I hate to say I know a little about these, but I do. My in-laws owned one, and I wondered the same thing. However, when you put it in Drive, the gear selector actually sits fairly low. It doesn't get in the way once you're moving.

Ayup . . . my wife likes her Diet Coke extra cold so she will stick a couple of cans in the freezer a while before dinner. Occasionally one has gotten left behind and that is the result.
I would think the best cleaning method here would be to get a Shop-Vac and suck up as much of the Pepsi ice/slush as possible while it is still frozen.

Looks like… it couldn't handle the pressure.

How is Ray Charles going to see out the windshield now? Oh wait, I got the wrong one, baby.

    How is that possible?

Contents are stored under pressure, and then the water expands while freezing. Eventually the can can't handle it and poof!

If youre going to do this, use diet soda. No sugar, no sticky! Just wipe it up.

From the drive-in movie scene in Electric Dreams:
      <SPLASH>
      Miles: I'm sorry.
Madeline: That's okay; diet soda doesn't stain.
Miles: It's not diet . . . and all they had was root beer.

I’ve had the opposite happen, with similar results. It was a can of Lipton Brisk, a ’92 Maxima, and a sunny triple digit day. Mythbusters once “busted” that a can of pop can explode when left in a car on a hot day. They were wrong.

I have personal experience verifying this, too. See my photo below.
      EDIT:
In my case, it was Canada Dry Green Tea Ginger Ale.
      SO, I blame Canada.

Every once in a while Mythbusters gets something wrong. The instance I can remember is whether toast always lands buttered side-down. It obviously doesn't, but they got the mechanics wrong.
From a dinner table, toast from a standard-sized pre-sliced loaf of bread will always land on the side that was facing up before it fell. Unless you flip your toast over after buttering it, that's the buttered side.
If you drop toast from a kitchen counter, it always lands on the side that was initially facing down. The extra height gives the slice of toast space to flip one extra time during the fall.

Just for the record, don't leave an unopened can of soda in your car when it's 104 degrees F, either.

Tangentially related: If you set an unopened can of soda in a campfire, it will eventually boil the contents and shoot into the woods. Just sayin.

You are lucky it went into the woods! Did the can move or just the contents?

The can shot off like a rocket. The soda mostly boiled off. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Whatever floats your boat, I guess, but Pepsi? When it's -10? I can think of several things I'd rather drink first.

I see there are several pictures. However, I want to see a video of this happening. Maybe it would be less spectacular than I think, however, I would still like to watch it happen… In someone elses car.

Umm… Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi. The only Pepsi I like besides Mt. Dew Throwback.
I put my sodas in the freezer to get them really cold from time to time. It really makes a mess when you forget about them.
Sometimes when you open them up they will spew out slowly, and you have to slurp them really quickly.
Diet sodas seem to be the most susceptible to the spewing/exploding for some reason. No sticky is awesome though.
