Last Call: I’d still take an Audi RS6 over the new M3 Touring any day

Don’t get me wrong, I love a sporty wagon as much as the next guy but for me, the new M3 just doesn’t do it. For starters, it has the Bugs Bunny bucktooth grille that I really can’t ignore. On top of that, BMW interiors feel much more cluttered to me than Audi or even Mercedes for that matter.

I’m sure it will be a great car and it will definitely look cool at a car meet. Maybe if they come out with a competition version that has a little more aero like the RS6 Avant I’d change my mind but that thing is such a beast I don’t see that happening.

For fun, I’ll say that I would maybe get one over a Mercedes AMG E63 S Wagon based on looks alone. But the exhaust note that comes with every AMG alone is worth getting one instead.

I hope the aftermarket steps up to fix it. A rocket bunny bumper could be the understated option for a change.

The RS6 is still too aggro for me, so I’d lean towards the smaller, (presumably) cheaper M3. Although, I suppose in this very hypothetical scenario, I’d just as likely pick up the nicest W204 C63 wagon that I could find as soon as one’s eligible for import (two years up here, I believe).

I do think the audi looks better, but I can’t see the grills when I’m driving, and as noted above it is likely that the m3 will be several 5 figure multiples cheaper…

Motorcycle rally Sturgis 2020 officially ended August 16th and surprise surprise surprise North and South Dakota (among the least populated and lowest density states and territories) have been topping the charts in new cases of COVID-19.

So, yeah. That turned out to be a bad idea.

I don’t know what your post about Sturgis is doing in a discussion about the Audi RS6 vs the BMW M3 Touring and I wish it wasn’t here.

I also wish it wasn’t wrong. I would prefer it if the Admins removed both your post and mine, but if they choose to leave your post here, I wish to reply to it. I will not drag this into an extended conversation; I will speak once and hope that you do the same…..

“ According to South Dakota health officials, 124 new cases in the state—including one fatal case—were directly linked to the rally. Overall, COVID-19 cases linked to the Sturgis rally were reported in 11 states as of September 2, to a tune of at least 260 new cases, according to The Washington Post. There very well may be more cases that have been linked to the early August event, but so far, that’s only 260 confirmed cases—about 0.1 percent of the number the IZA paper offers.

To get to the astronomical number of cases allegedly spread because of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the researchers analyzed “anonymized cellphone data to track the smartphone pings from non-residents and movement of those before and after the event,” notes Newsweek. “The study then linked those who attended and traveled back to their home states, and compared changes in coronavirus trends after the rally’s conclusion.

Essentially, the researchers assumed that new spikes in cases in areas where people went post-rally must have been caused by those rally attendees, despite there being no particular evidence that this was the case.”

Last night I realized that I’ve had my license for 20 years. This was so important to me, getting it right after my 18th birthday. Today, many kids don’t have that dream and it is quite common to think “I’ll take that later” – also because it is really expensive in Norway, you got to expect spending 4k$ if everything goes well. The freedom this little piece of plastic symbolizes though…I appreciate and wouldn’t want to be without it.

Oh wow, I wasn’t aware a driver’s license was that costly in Norway. I want to say it was only a couple hundred dollars for the driver’s ed class when I took mine.

Yeah, I got away with the bare minimum 20 years ago at about 500$ (someone else cancelled a driver’s test at the last minute and my teacher called, “of all the fools here, you might be the one to stand” – all the motivation I needed). Drivers ed here is 17h of theory, and a lot of obligatory driving lessons, e.g. on ice.

An Israeli friend told me about his process, which includes paying the instructor, by the lesson, until the instructor is satisfied. All practice is done with the instructor; it is illegal for parents (unless they are certified instructors) to practice with their teen. It creates a big financial incentive for the instructor to say the student still isn’t ready.

The same in Germany, it’s a rigid system. But it has huge advantages: People with a license can drive. It’s a bit like a tariff based wage system: It’s rigid and expensive, but people need not have more than one job to survive.

In Norway, parents or others can take the non-special driving lessons with their kids. I have had friends test the rubber bumpers on former Volvo 240s. Also, these things started rolling if you put them in gear, very friendly to new beginners…

When my oldest son went through the process, I was disappointed in how ridiculously easy the process was here in the States. I guess I just assumed it had become more rigorous since I was a kid. I had been out with my son many times before he decided to take the exam, and I was certain he would fail, based on my own criteria. They passed him, even though he technically didn’t correctly complete the driving portion. Getting a DL here is almost as easy as getting a Costco membership.

I started driving motorcycles, go-carts, and tractors at age 5, and then started driving trucks “on the farm” at age 10, so getting my license at 16 wasn’t a huge milestone.

As easy as the process may or may not be, there are still a number of unlicensed drivers on the roads.

Question: If your kid didn’t meet your standards, why did you let him take the exam? Getting into a wreck as a licensed driver doesn’t solve any problems, and may create some.

How many faults can you have to pass? Has he improved since?
Sending my kids driving without them really grasping what is at stake, and having a sense of overview and technical mastery, is already something I worry about. They’re 8 and 9… 😛

In the US, each state sets its own requirements.

When I took my test, there were several tasks, with a maximum point value for each. Passing score was 70 points out of 100 possible.

The trooper who administered my test had a hat. When he got in my car, he removed the hat and set it on the dashboard. It bothered me, but I wasn’t about to tell the guy in charge of my score that he was doing something wrong. Apparently that was part of the test, and I lost 10 points for driving with an obstructed view.

I wonder how many 16-18 year olds pass that test. My “tester” had a very sinister look on his face all the time. While we talked when driving, I insecurely kept looking at him, trying to find a smile. During evaluation he said that he had never had a kid secure the car so well by checking the mirrors…oops.

It is probably a good idea not to let teen drivers get overconfident by giving them too high of a score. If I would have otherwise had, say 68 points for the other tested skills, Ii wonder if that would have only been a 7 or 8 point deduction instead of the full 10, so that my end score would barely pass.

Watch as Roy Underhill offers enlightenment in the form of Sci-Fi and comedy movie references, cliches, zen koans, dad jokes and occasional English Literature.

    https://www.pbs.org/video/woodwrights-shop-spirit-woodcraft/

It’s a single-shot twenty minute monologue with antique hand tools, finger puppets and stuffed turkeys. At the end of it I was thinking, never mind the woodworking, how can I get to be as good an instructor as this guy? (Also, Have I really been watching this show for 40 years?)

I heard we were getting some assistance from you down under folks. Like you hadn’t had enough wildfire fighting this year!

I’m only affected a little. I can’t cry about my travel plans being cancelled when other people are losing their homes and lives.
Here’s today at 11 AM in San Francisco, 100 miles from the nearest major fire (closer fires are at 80% or more containment.). Drivers have their headlights on and everything is orange (that’s not a filter.)

Yesterday the skies were not as dark, and high level winds/marine air kept SF’s air rather clean. Something happened overnight, though. I’m not fastidious about cleaning my van, but this all fell on it last night.

I hadn’t seen that news but that’s good to hear of the help. That view looks quite familiar from early this year, although I was a bit further away from our fires & visibility was down to a mile or so.
