Last Call: First and Last Edition


This is the first post I ever published on Hooniverse, all the way back in October of 2009. Since the I’ve been honored to bring you 5,567 others. This is probably not my last here, but if it is then I wanted to do it right and bring it all home. Speaking of which, I still have all of these manuals, along with about 2,500 car magazines spanning the 1950s through the 2000s. I am a fire hazard, but I’m also a handy resource for automotive knowledge.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day.  It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

  1. Sometimes I wonder if I could do my own automotive site. Then I read a post like this and realize no, there’s no way I can write 5,500 of anything. Thanks for all the hard work! I love this site.
    I always leave my guides behind for the next owner. I wonder if they keep them.

  3. This is so frustrating, two hours in and I’m unable to find a Le Mans table that’s:
    – “live” updated (I don’t mind a lag of a few minutes)
    – Listing a lap counter
    – Listing distance (time or # laps down)
    – showing Current driver
    – showing cars out
    – not washing me down with 5MB promo images (my data plan is 100MB/month, thank you)
    Michelin had a good one in the years before, but they’ve dumbed it down and removed both lap counter, distance, and DNF cars.

      1. The rendering on my phone was very sluggish, but it’s indeed what I have been looking for – thank you for making a humble hooniversalist very, very happy!

          I’m settling in now, and looking for some live video. Still have to check ‘Radio
          Le Mans’ too. Porsche’s website doesn’t seem to think any things happening today.
          Let’s see if Toyota can hold it together.

          1. Well, I was watching it live when #7 and #9 first crept along the course, and then stopped. Man, they don’t deserve this.
            When I checked somewhere today, there was a LMP2 car in the lead, huh!
            This makes me wonder if the LMP1 class needs some redesign, with basically only two teams competing here. The Aston Martin-911 battles where great to watch, since diversity often helps.

          2. I like it that the classes aren’t so far apart. It’s cool that Jackie Chan’s team led a lot of laps. And one of the Toyotas clawed back from a huge deficit.
            Aston and Corvette swapping paint in the last laps was great, as was Porsche losing a class win by not managing their gas well. And the usual number of Ferraris blew their engines.

          3. I couldn’t watch any of the second daytime racing, it’s a regular Sunday to most of the people living in my house… The Vantage / Corvette footage is great indeed!

    1. I’ve installed the app now, 24H Le Mans. The download was 50mb through wifi, but the live timing is exactly what I was looking for.

    1. I’ve been concerned about this place for a while. Commenting never recovered after the crash of the old site and the switch to Disqus, Jeff threatened to ban a commenter the other day for seemingly no reason, and editors are dropping off.

  4. I’m in Maine visiting my family, who are champion Yard Sale hunters. Their latest acquisition? A 2000 SAAB 95 SE wagon for the bargain basement price of six hundred dollars.

    110,000 miles, clean body, four new Dunlops, V6 automatic, clean title and reg. It needs a new muffler and tailpipe, and the engine was very low on oil when they got it. $600 !!!
    I’ve advised them to flip it as soon as the inspection sticker is on the windshield. KBB says fair – good condition is $1300 – $1500

    1. Auto, and the engine famous for slugging issues. They’re nice cars when they are in good order, but it’s the wrong power train combo for me.

      1. Was the GM 3.0 liter 54 degree V6 famous for oil sludging? Wikipedia says it was the I4 engine. It’s got some wacky SAAB ‘asymmetrical’ turbo, also according to wikipikidedea, but I see no boost gauge. Maybe that’s an ’80s thing.

        1. Not the engine. It’s a perfectly good Opel engine. What I heard was that GM insisted that a finer mesh screen be used over the oil pump pickup. Standard oils and extended changes killed a lot of engines, by gunning up that screen and starving the oil pump. And owner and third party oil changes had warranty denials. This is a circumstance where following the owner’s manual, going to the dealer on time, and using synthetics was the smart move. Eventually they went back to a coarser mesh and the problem cured itself.

          1. not the first time and surely will not be the last time GM engineering has shot themselves in the foot and then kicked themselves in the cods. over thinking the problem. the simple solution is usually the cheapest.

          2. Even then, a full synthetic oil change history was no guarantee that sludge would not be an issue. If anything, higher-mileage 9-5s and 9-3s are better bets for *not* being sludgy. As current keeper of five different Saabs (two of my own, 3x belonging to my GF and her kids) I’ve done enough Saab oil pan drops that I leave the engine beam assembled and add bigger holes to the pickup screens on reassembly.

        2. No sludge issues on the Opel engine. Here, timing belt/idler pulley maintenance is vital, and oil coolers are a known failure item. But when working, the 3.0 is a nice drive.

    2. 600$ is what I’d pay for good new tires here, and it’s not even twice the cash for clunkers value. Amazing deal indeed!
      Also, share some of that Maine scenery please. 🙂

    Last Call and Hooniverse Asks are going to be missed, and I hope somebody will pick up the slack. Asks is posted precisely at the end of my work day, and Last Call is the first tentative step on to the interwebs in my mornings. Who’s going to hold my day together now?

    I’m taking a Fundamentals Of Boatbuilding (wooden) course. I have no idea how to row or sail or build a boat, or at least, very little exposure to any of the three.
    Get out of San Francisco, that’s the main (Maine!) thing. I’m in Brooklin, Maine, west of Bar Harbor / Mount Desert Island and east of Deer Isle. Down to Portland on the 1st, back in California by the 8th.
    My sister’s Dodge Neon got me here in good time. Not bad for a Mopar. Not as chintzy and underwhelming as most modern Chrysler products, reasonable vision, except for the stupid wing (which blocks tailgater’s headlights, so it has some use.)

      1. We gather here today in memory of Dr. Harrell. Who we can only assume is slowly transforming under the pressure and heat of the used book archives. Which will continue to settle and seek their natural angle of repose despite archaeological efforts.
