Last Call- Fairer Sex Education Edition

Captioned only as “Girl’s Mechanics Class, Circa 1927” this is an awesome shot of four young ladies, posed getting their wrenches on. They totally look the part, their high heels show that while their overalls could be pressed into duty no matter what the gender of their wearers, mechanics shoes were far more of a challenge.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

Well, you know… cars were taller back then. And evidently everything was a lot dirtier.

That's a tall order. Google American Cars 1920-1925 and you'll see how many potential candidates there are. I'll bet there were over 100 manufacturers on the east coast alone. I'm putting my money on a lesser "budget" brand (painted radiator shell, bucketed headlights and the fact that it was a high school's project vehicle suggest that.) Who knows what the answer is, maybe one of the Durant brands?

According to a couple of Shorpyites, it's a Stephens Salient Six, a premium car back when it was new – three times the cost of a contemporary Model T.

According to the ladies I know, heels are convenient because they can be used as an impromptu hammer.

My favorite Neko Case tune. One of my favorite tunes, period.

Do you have any other favourite female artists? Mine, in no particular order, would be Katie Melua, Joan Baez, Amy MacDonald, and more recently Taylor Swift's acoustic performances. All names are links to youtube videos, assuming they work. I've probably forgotten someone.

If you fancy Neko, check out her frequent co-conspirator Kelly Hogan. She's amazing, one of the best female voices working today. Only 4 of her own albums, but she's sung on dozens of other acts' recordings.

            She's.. good.
I was just ordering some records, added the I Like to Keep Myself in Pain LP. Ordered some Airbourne, Neko Case, Nick Cave, John Fogerty, HIM, J.Karjalainen,Taylor Swift, and Clutch at the same time.. I do most of my listening digitally, but I like to buy the albums of the artists I like to support them. Goodbye 350€, hello great music!
Also I don't know if I'm hearing things or if my ear is starting to develop.. but the notes in the beginning of "Hold On, Hold On" reminded me of the beginning notes in this:

Hmmm, not sure I hear the similarity, but Hold On is an old familiar & I'd never heard the song you posted before.
Hogan's voice is breathtaking, and I hope she finds a much greater audience than she currently has. Hogan & Case are pretty funny on Twitter, too, as they were on this: http://www.witsradio.org/episodes/twenty-six/
I'd add Eilen Jewell, Carolyn Mark (another compadre of Case & Hogan), Zoe Muth & the Lost High Rollers, Lydia Loveless, and Jolie Holland to your to-listen-to list. (Everyone has one, right?)

Added all of those to my list.. Thank You. I forgot Zooey Deschanel (in She & Him, and Munchausen by Proxy in "Yes Man"), Imelda May, and probably someone else earlier. Imelda's got an amazing voice.
I had a quick listen to all the ones you mentioned, clicked the first videos that popped up and particularly like this one.

I should really grab myself by the neck, fix my guitar, and start playing again.

I don't mean they're similar songs, the intro just sounds like the same notes on the guitar played differently. Any actual musicians here want to chime in and tell me to go and sit in the corner?

Wasted way too much time going through my albums. Couldn't decide on songs to post. Anyway, ended up a bit in a jazz mode.

She also played bass in Rodan, which was a pretty sweet early '90s post-punk band.

Who has two thumbs and saw Neko Case play this past weekend? This guy! Kelly Hogan was also there on backup vocals/stage banter. They're a pretty good double act between songs.
I figured someone had to brag.
