Freddy Hernandez, AKA Tavarish, has been tinkering with a variety of cars on his YouTube channel. His recent acquisition, however, is a rather ambitious project car. It’s a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder that was previously owned by a person with a need for speed. Hence the installed twin-turbo kit and fire damage.
Tavarish has been working his way through the rear end of the car in order to get it back in to running and driving condition. It’s been a hell of a journey so far, and now Freddy has finally fired up the machine.
The fun part about this series is that Freddy is an everyman wrench just like the rest of us. He’s learning as he goes, and he’s documenting the entire process. He just happens to be doing this on an imposing vehicle.

The 1977 Corvette sitting in my driveway. It has been off the road since 1996. Needs an engine and transmission rebuild, some interior work too. Probably some leaks fixed too. I did buy a damaged 400 small block to get the parts to rebuild my 350 as a 383. That was over a year ago. I hope to have it ready for my daughter when she turns 16. My daughter is currently 6 and I secretly hope that she doesn’t like it so that I can have it back. Even if she does get it, it will only be on loan.

Nice. I had a low-buck ’81 disco vette project for a while but sold it after I got into the body work and realized a repaint was an economic non-starter.
This was before wraps were a thing. I think I would go that route now if I still had it. It was never going to be a show car, but my options were either rattle can it myself and have car that appeared to have mange or sell it to some other dude with delusions of grandeur. I went with the latter.

There are some pretty awesome late model Falcon builds that immediately spring to mind.
The FAWD, a 2007-ish wagon with Territory all wheel drive and an RTV ute rear locking diff, injected LPG dual fuel for nearly 1,000 miles range, custom bullbar, custom interior with every factory gadget added and quite a few more such as paddle shifters. Plus it gets driven, desert, mountains all around Australia, closing in on 200k miles. The owner is still adding stuff to it and doing trips.
A custom built FG G6E Turbo with a range of Ford, GM and BMW parts to do a normal height AWD system under the engine. On E85 it makes something like 700 who and was timed 0-60 in 3.0 sec. The guy is potentially going to put together kits when I last checked in a while ago now. There is a dyno video on YouTube.
An FG GT with the Voodoo 5.2 dropped in, supercharged to 1,000 whp or so, plus full suspension setup and flares to fit wide rubber. Next step is apparently 1,300 whp.
Saw a nice Nissan R32 GT-T build with a 900 hp Barra, apparently the engine is only 5 kg more than an RB26.
A mate is currently doing some rust repair ahead of putting a Banks turbo kit on the 7.3 diesel in his Bronco. -

I’m not too much into crazy builds for the sake of it, I like when they have a clear purpose, or an idea that drives them.

I’m really into the 240Z/M5 build that Chris from B Is For Build is doing. Basically, he’s building a frame to put all of the M5 drivetrain and suspension into the shell of the 240Z. Should be an absolute beast when he’s done.

At least it’s an inline-6… assuming you’re referring to the E28/E34 M5 . I get so tired of small-block Chevy builds in 240Zs.

I saw that when I searched for the video. Chris has an amiable delivery, so you’ve probably gotten me hooked on the series. (Thanks!)
However, my favorite thing about driving a 240Z is its balance, and while the S85 is a sweet engine (and sounds phenomenal), it would add a good 150-175 lbs up front that I wouldn’t want. I doubt Chris can cut enough weight out of the front end to compensate. This will likely be a 240 that goes like hell but can’t dance. I sincerely hope he doesn’t widebody it, but otherwise I don’t know how he’ll get enough rubber under the fenders to hook up.-
He’s going to widebody it. Can’t fit the M5 axles and suspension without doing a widebody front and rear, let alone the rubber. Couldn’t get away with just shortening the axles to run stock width either – from one of his planning videos it looks like the front (and probably rear) suspension will necessitate widening the fenders significantly.

Well, he’s not making a 240Z I’d want to own, but it might be cool nonetheless. It’s certainly ambitious. I’m just so tired of seeing over-engined, widened 240Zs at shows, that it’s refreshing to find non-stock cars with beefy wheels under stock fenders and engines with usable horsepower.

Totally agree. I wouldn’t want to own it. I’m just majorly impressed with the ambition of the build. If a big shop with a dozen professional fabricators was doing it strictly for a SEMA show car with super glossy paint, deep shiny rims and ‘dat stance yo’, it’d be kindof an eye-roller… but this is a (skilled & ballsy) amateur working in the garage behind his house apparently by himself (with occasional help from a friend who’s a professional welder).

Agreed. This is the most ambitious build out there right now. There are tons of crazy builds going on in the world always, but this is an amateur building a tube frame from scratch to which he will attach the front and rear subframes and drivetrain from a V10 M5 and stuff it all into a 240Z. Then he plans to fit a custom interior and wants to use the M5’s dash. I can’t imagine something more ambitious than that. I am rooting like hell for him to succeed.
I am struggling to keep my 944 roadworthy, and the main reason is time: there are these people constantly demanding ridiculous things such as care and “quality time together”, the garage was constantly under 15F for a couple of months, other issues keep jumping up the list.

I feel your pain. My E28 is sidelined right now, too, for want of new upper control arms and other miscellaneous stuff. My garage is currently half-occupied by my kids’ crap and half by my wife’s DD. And she won’t give up her spot for more than a shift until the weather is reliably warm and dry. She has a business trip in about a month, so I’m making a priority list for the Bimmer. Hopefully I can knock everything out then.
this one is cool, but they made more progress on it in the first 9 months than over most of the next 5 years

Crabspirit’s (the guy who built the MetSHO Taurus SHO powered Geo lemons car and Subaru 360 Firebug) “LS” (as in Lexus LS V8) Lincoln LS drift car. As of now half the images are broken (thanks Photo bucket) but it’s still and interesting build.

My coworker at FormaCars is building an early 240z with a full 350z swap – engine, transmission, rear end suspension and full dash and center console I don’t know if he’s got it online anywhere or not.

He likes the look of the 350z interior, plus that makes it easy to integrate the 350z gauges that play nice with the ecu. This kid’s young enough that his mom wasn’t even born when his 240 was built (it’s a ’73) so he’s got no sentimental ties to the original style

Usually, whatever Mighty Car Mods is doing, currently the 240Z. Kind of ridiculous how their Aussie rules on asbestos made them chuck the drive-line on the car they imported from Japan, but it’s made for an interesting project.

Almost forgot, Coldwarmotors is completely different and worth watching. They’re based in Alberta, Canada. Current project – making a crusty Citroen SM that was purchased for the price of $0 into a daily driver for as little money as possible. The soothing baritone voice of the “host” is fueled by a love for weird cars that is only surpassed by his love for standard poodles (you have to watch to understand and appreciate). Also, drinking of cheap beer, swearing, and lots of wry humor.

A shame about the timing for them. Presumably the requirements and processes will be clarified as time goes on.
In a common sense world changing brake pads/shoes should be enough, I mean is the head gasket really a risk? AQIS allowed Great Wall to get away with leaving asbestos containing HG’s in a bunch of pickups. Then they might get into body deadener and sealants.
Also I had to laugh at Turbo Yoda ditching all the original individual throttle bodies. Given air flow speeds involved I wonder if they make a noticeable difference.
