The venerable Vespa may have defined the scooter trope, but it’s not the only step-through bike money can buy. Seemingly a separate species from those other motorized two-wheelers, the motorcycles, scooters have managed to maintain a level of hep-ness and machismo despite their typically diminutive displacements and skirt-friendly designs. But which of them is the most cool? When you think of a scooter perhaps your mind immediately goes to the stereotypical image of a swarthy Italian flying down la carreggiata with a raven-haired beauty side-saddle on the back holding a skinny loaf of bread and a fiasco of chianti. For me – at least recently – the image is instead of a Honda Ruckus and far more tattoos. The bare-bones Honda scooter was introduced here in 2003 and stood in stark contrast to the sculpted and elegant Elite series that preceded it. See, that’s the thing. Scooters, just like motorcycles, come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and demeanors.
