Hooniverse Asks- What's More American, Ford or Chevy?

Let’s say that the Great Gazoo arrives from Planet Nine and it’s your responsibility to explain to him about the people of the Earth. Naturally, being a firm believer in American Exceptionalism, you want to pump up our great nation in case he’s seeking world domination, and you want to make sure that we’re seen as the cool kid that gets left alone. When you get around to which car brand best exemplifies the American ideal, which one would you choose- Ford or Chevy?

I'd salute that

Each brand has been the mainstay of their respective parents literally for generations, and both cater to the bedrock of the American iconography- the middle class. But which one shouts America F**k yeah! the loudest? Maybe neither of them represents the old Stars and Stripes the way they should anymore. Is there another make that eclipses these in being so freedom fry-worthy that you could proudly bury Ollie North in one without a second thought?
So, which is it- Henry’s ladies, or the bow tie brigade, or maybe. . . ?

Well, Chevy's actually currently owned by America, so there's that.
Also, Ford as a brand exists in more places outside the US than Chevy (b/c there's Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, etc…).
As for which I'd rather were the representative of the US, well, my proclivities are well known.

Damn, you beat me to it.
Chevy is owned by America, so it is more American.
Also, Ford owns brands outside the US that are not badge engineered between the Ford name.

      1. engineerd Avatar

It's also owned by Canada and at least Germany (through bailouts from the German government to Opel). So, at best it's a mutt.

And yet being of mixed but at least partially Teutonic makeup is so incredibly American.
          I think I just meta-ed my pants.

A majority of the Founding Fathers were believers in the free market with a minimum of government interference, and that individuals should be responsible for themselves and their actions. Expanding that attitude to corporations, it can be easily argued that Ford, by not turning to the government for help after they screwed the pooch, is the most American.

      Except for that bastard, Hamilton.

Well, Chevrolet was founded by a Swiss emigrant. Herny Ford was at least a 1st generation American. Ford is still controlled by people with the same name as the one on the building. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_family_tree
No matter where Ford goes in the world they are know as Ford and known as an American company. GM goes for local companies: Holden, Vauxhaul, Opel, etc.
Chevy is currently under government control. Ford isn't. Ford wins.
Plus, more Americans can spell Ford right the first time (Chevy doesn't count).

I'd say ford, but everyone else has.
So is Chrysler the high school drop out meth head?

Chrysler is the weird uncle that you don't talk about anymore.

      1. JeepyJayhawk Avatar

You just put the more well known (down here): "Football, meta pies, kangaroos and Holden cars…" in my head. Bastard.

Yeah, I was gonna bring up the Aussie variant!

Football, meat pies, kangaroos, Holden cars, and breasts!
A close second for Australia, though (since I don't believe Ford ever produced something this blatantly patriotic):

Aaaaaand I think this comment is irredeemably fuxored.
As such, the above… wotsit… was meant to be a link to this.
Bonus Australia points go to this, despite not being from a native automaker; I don't think Ford did anything blatantly patriotic down there:

OK, maybe this is a good time I can post a link to one of my favorite, relatively recent Ford commercials… it's long, but It's pretty cool what all the people in the commercial have in common.

I thought you were joking at first, then clicked on the link that Fuzzy posted, and, damn… very cool indeed!

Why is it that whenever I see a picture of Sarah Palin looking hot, she's always wearing the same hairdo and expression while holding her head at the exact same angle?

    1. Age_of_Aerostar Avatar

because that's the only way she can look hot?

  9. muthalovin Avatar

If I was to show Great Gazoo arrives from Planet Nine what real 'Merica was about, I would take him to Wal-Mart and count the brands in the parking lot. Winner has the most. Ready, Go!

  10. CptSevere Avatar

My non-answer to the question is both. I have one of each, and both of them are fine vehicles. A good truck is a good truck, and I can't stand it when some dumbass has a Calvin pissing on X sticker.
Of course, both of my vehicles are from the mid sixties, and things were different then.

Ford because Fordism help won ww2 mass production vs quality
example: The German Tiger tank was the world most powerful tank but fewer were produce because it was time consuming to build vs the Russian T-34 tank which Stalin went to america and ask Detroit to help build a tank that could help defeat the German Tiger tank. Only 1,347 Tiger 1 tank were produce vs 84,070 t-34 that were produced. In the end the t-34 massive production overwhelmed the german tiger and stop the german invasion. The t-34 is one of the most influential, most effective, and efficient design of ww2.
P51 Mustang Fighter plane was powered by a Ford motor in ww2.
The Ford Gt40 is the only american car to win the 24 hour leman serries 4 times 1966,1967,1968,1969 search "list of 24 hours le mans winners" on google and you will see.The modern ford gt with 1700 hp is the world fastest car with top speed of 283 mph compared to the hennesy gt which is a lotus with a chevy small block top speed is 265 mph. Carrol Shelby build the Shelby Cobra which dominated the European race track which had a ford small block in it. He also build the Shelby gt 500 which is also a legend. The Ford T model was name car of the 20 century which means that all the cars that were produced all over the world from 1900-2000 the ford t-model was chosen. Ford is the only american engine supplier for formula 1 and has won a championship which is the mclaren Ford car.
sure chevy makes great automobiles but ford is the real american pride that shows the world that americans can be just as competitive with the rest of the world. Oh and ford is the only american car Manufactuer that didnt take the bail out from the government in 2008. Gm and chrysler both file for bankrupsy and took loans from the government which is not the american way!!!. In america we like to think that it is a free market where supply and demand is in controlled of the the economy where Gm a big company file for bankrupsy and should fall so the smaller and more adapt company should rise. But thats not how it goes big companies like that are called "To big to fall" so the realilty is its capitalism where the powerful companies get special treatment from the government so that they can survive.
